The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have long functioned as the IPL’s primary benchmark for institutional stability. That reputation, however, appears to be crumbling. For the first time since the league’s inception, the “Men in Yellow” have staggered to a 0-3 start in the 2026 season. After falling to the Rajasthan Royals and failing to defend a massive total against Punjab, their recent 43-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has left the fan base in a state of genuine disbelief.
This isn’t just a slow start; it is a statistical anomaly for the franchise. While the 2022 season was difficult, the current trajectory suggests a deeper, perhaps more systemic, decline than anything witnessed since the inaugural 2008 campaign.
The current struggle within the CSK camp seems to be a combination of tactical rigidity and underperforming marquee names. The clinical, almost surgical precision of the MS Dhoni years has been replaced by a visible sense of panic during the middle overs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is currently navigating a storm. It is difficult to ignore the data: only eight wins in his last twenty matches and a losing streak that now spans six games if you count the tail end of 2025. Leadership in Chennai has always relied on a certain “spark” or intuitive field placement. Without Dhoni on the field to act as a tactical anchor—his calf injury leaving him relegated to the dugout—Gaikwad’s decision-making often appears reactive. The bowling changes, in particular, have lacked the proactive edge needed to stifle momentum.
The bowling department is currently being dismantled with alarming ease. The issues are threefold:
Perhaps the most scrutinized element of this 0-3 run is Sanju Samson. Signed for a staggering ₹18 crore, he was expected to be the centerpiece of the post-Dhoni transition. Instead, scores of 6, 7, and 9 have left the middle order remarkably brittle. Whether it is the weight of the price tag or a technical glitch, his current form is a significant liability.
| Opponent | Result | Primary Tactical Failure | Standout Effort | Net Run Rate (NRR) |
| Rajasthan Royals | Lost by 72 runs | Total Batting Inertia (127 All Out) | Matt Henry (2/28) | -3.600 |
| Punjab Kings | Lost by 5 wickets | Defending 209; Poor Line/Length | Ayush Mhatre (73) | -1.250 |
| RCB | Lost by 43 runs | Historic Death Over Leakage | Sarfaraz Khan (50) | -2.517 |
SLH Perspective: With an aggregate NRR of -2.517, CSK is currently anchored to the bottom of the table. To salvage a playoff spot, the mathematics are simple but daunting: they likely need eight wins from their final eleven games. For a squad devoid of momentum, that is a steep climb.

Surprisingly, no. Even in their most difficult years, they managed to scrape a win in the first three games. The 2026 season represents the worst statistical start in the franchise’s history.
Dhoni is sidelined with a calf injury sustained during pre-season training. While he remains part of the traveling squad as a mentor, there is no official word on when—or if—he will take the field again this season.
Not mathematically. However, the margin for error has essentially vanished. They must secure roughly 72% of the remaining points available to stay in contention.
Ayush Mhatre has shown significant promise. His 73 against Punjab was a rare display of the aggression that the rest of the top order seems to be lacking.
