South Africa will face Zimbabwe in Match 4 of the Namibia T20I Tri-Series 2026 at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on September 1. The Proteas will be keen to carry forward the momentum from their comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in their previous outing.
South Africa had started the tri-series with a disappointing 18-run defeat against hosts Namibia, despite a sensational 75 off 32 balls from Dewald Brevis. However, they bounced back emphatically against Zimbabwe, chasing down 145 in just 13.4 overs. Brevis once again starred, remaining unbeaten on 75 off 32 deliveries.
The Proteas have named a youthful squad for the tri-series, with Bjorn Fortuin leading the side. The squad includes Brevis, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Tony de Zorzi, Rubin Hermann, Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann, Kwena Maphaka and Eathan Bosch.
With the team gaining confidence after their victory over Zimbabwe, South Africa could opt for a largely unchanged combination. However, the recent injury to Lutho Sipamla has forced a change in the bowling group, with Andile Simelane brought in as his replacement.
Here is the predicted playing XI of South Africa for Match 4 against Zimbabwe:
Lhuan-dre Pretorius is expected to open the innings.
The young wicketkeeper-batter is one of the most exciting prospects in South African cricket and has been given an opportunity to establish himself at the international level. His aggressive approach makes him well suited to T20 cricket.
Pretorius will be expected to take advantage of the Powerplay and provide South Africa with a brisk start alongside his opening partner.
Rubin Hermann could partner Pretorius at the top of the order.
The left-handed batter offers another attacking option and can put pressure on Zimbabwe’s seamers during the first six overs. His ability to find boundaries square of the wicket makes him an important component of South Africa’s top order.
After the Proteas’ aggressive chase in the previous game, Hermann will be keen to make a substantial contribution.
Dewald Brevis is the obvious choice at No. 3 and enters the match in outstanding form.
The youngster smashed an unbeaten 75 off 32 balls against Zimbabwe, following another 75 against Namibia in South Africa’s opening game.
His back-to-back half-centuries have made him one of the standout performers of the tournament. Brevis’ ability to attack both pace and spin makes him a nightmare for opposition bowlers.
Zimbabwe will be particularly wary of allowing him to settle.
Tony de Zorzi could come in at No. 4 and provide stability to the middle order.
The left-hander has plenty of experience at the domestic and international level and can adapt his approach according to the match situation.
If South Africa lose an early wicket, De Zorzi can rebuild the innings. Alternatively, if Pretorius, Hermann and Brevis provide a strong platform, he can increase the tempo.
Connor Esterhuizen is another player likely to retain his place in the middle order.
The young batter is capable of playing aggressive cricket and gives the Proteas another right-handed option around the middle of their lineup.
His ability to rotate the strike will be important if Zimbabwe deploy their spinners during the middle overs.
Jason Smith should provide South Africa with valuable all-round depth.
The experienced domestic campaigner can contribute with both bat and ball, giving captain Bjorn Fortuin additional tactical flexibility.
Smith’s ability to bowl medium pace could be particularly useful against Zimbabwe’s right-handed-heavy batting order.
Duan Jansen is likely to feature as the pace-bowling all-rounder.
The tall left-armer provides South Africa with a useful combination of bounce, pace and batting ability. His height allows him to extract awkward bounce, while his lower-order hitting can add crucial runs.
Jansen could also be used during the Powerplay or at the death depending on the match situation.
Prenelan Subrayen could be the specialist spin option.
The off-spinner provides control during the middle overs and can be particularly effective if the Windhoek surface slows down.
His matchup against Zimbabwe’s experienced middle order, particularly Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl, could be important.
Eathan Bosch is expected to feature in the pace attack after making his T20I debut against Zimbabwe.
The right-arm seamer offers pace and aggression and can attack the stumps with the new ball.
His ability to bowl hard lengths should make him an effective partner for Kwena Maphaka, particularly against Zimbabwe’s aggressive opening pair.
Kwena Maphaka should retain his place as one of South Africa’s premier pace options.
The teenager has already made an impression at the international level and possesses the pace required to trouble batters in T20 cricket.
He will be expected to attack the Zimbabwean top order during the Powerplay before potentially returning for the death overs.
Captain Bjorn Fortuin could complete the XI.
The left-arm spinner provides South Africa with another option in the middle overs and will have an important tactical role against Zimbabwe.
Fortuin’s leadership has been particularly important given the youthful nature of this Proteas squad. He will also have to manage his bowling resources carefully after the injury to Lutho Sipamla.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius (WK), Rubin Hermann, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Jason Smith, Duan Jansen, Prenelan Subrayen, Eathan Bosch, Kwena Maphaka, Bjorn Fortuin (C)
