1st T20I | Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan 2026 | Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium | 9 October 2026
Nobody has been named as a direct successor to Nissanka, so Kamil Mishara and captain Kusal Mendis are the most visible candidates to carry the opening burden. Nissanka was ruled out through injury, and Hasaranga joined him on the sidelines on 2 October, with both hoping to be back in time for the one-day tri-series if fitness allows, which leaves the selectors improvising for now. The reshuffled batting unit meets Pakistan on 9 October at Rawalpindi, a ground where batting first has paid.
Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out because of injury, and the nature of the problem has not been disclosed. Wanindu Hasaranga is also unavailable, with that news arriving on 2 October. Both players aim to be available once the one-day tri-series arrives, though a comeback depends on passing fitness tests. For now the national side must plan without either of them.
The squad list names no replacement, so Sri Lanka must decide late whether to promote an existing batter or hand an opening to someone new. Losing a settled opener and a wicket-taking spinner at once is rough preparation. The 124-run defeat to India on 1 October only adds pressure, and confidence is bound to be fragile heading into a new series in unfamiliar conditions.
Mishara stands out on the numbers, averaging 26.95 with a strike rate of 130.41. Mendis follows at 26.16 and 130.21, which makes the pair close in output. Mendis also captains the side, so his role at the top has to balance personal scoring with decision-making.
Jayawardena and Udara are far thinner prospects, with averages of 1.50 and 0.00 in the data available. Those figures come from tiny samples and should not decide selection, yet they show how little international T20 evidence the lower options bring. Sri Lanka may lean on proven names rather than gamble, particularly because the opening overs shape the whole innings in this format and a collapse at the start is hard to repair.
| Batter | Team | Average | Strike Rate |
| Kamil Mishara | Sri Lanka | 26.95 | 130.41 |
| Kusal Mendis | Sri Lanka | 26.16 | 130.21 |
| Sineth Jayawardena | Sri Lanka | 1.50 | 27.27 |
| Lahiru Udara | Sri Lanka | 0.00 | 0.00 |
Pakistan have named fifteen players under Farhan, with Fakhar, Ayub, Hasan Nawaz and Minhas available for the early overs. Samad, Randhawa, Nafay and Maaz Sadaqat add depth. Naseem, Razaullah and Salman Mirza lead the pace options, while Abrar, Shadab and Moqim cover spin.
Powerplay bowling statistics for the group are not available, so Sri Lanka cannot lean on clear figures when planning against them. What is certain is the intent: a squad mixing hitting with wicket-taking options. The new-ball overs will test whoever opens for the visitors, and a poor start would hand Pakistan control. Their bowlers will attack early, knowing the replacement faces extra scrutiny.
T20 innings at Rawalpindi average 186.9 when batting first and 155.3 when chasing across the last 30 matches, although the date range of that sample is inconsistent. The gap of more than thirty runs favours the side that sets a target, and it adds weight to the toss. Captains at this ground will most likely prefer to bat first and put the chase under strain.
The latest head-to-head count reads 25 meetings, with 14 wins for Pakistan, 10 for Sri Lanka and one no result. Sri Lanka have won two of their last five against Pakistan and lost three. That record gives the hosts a modest edge, though a team missing two key players rarely follows a script.
Three T20Is will be played at Rawalpindi on 9, 11 and 13 October, and the ground stages seven matches on this tour once ODIs and a Test are added. The start time for the opener has not been confirmed, so supporters should watch for an official update.
Mendis leads Sri Lanka into the series, and how he solves the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 1st T20I top order puzzle before the first ball will define the tone of the tour. A quick answer would settle nerves, while confusion would invite pressure from the first over, and Pakistan will gladly seize that opening.
