Rohit Sharma rolled back the years with a spectacular century in the second ODI against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on September 30. The veteran opener smashed 101 off 75 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes, as India chased down West Indies’ mammoth 406-run target with 39 balls to spare.
While Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 223 grabbed most of the headlines, Rohit’s contribution was equally significant. His aggressive start laid the foundation for India’s historic chase, with the former captain adding 255 runs with Gill for the opening wicket.
The century also saw Rohit enter another elite statistical club and rewrite several records associated with his remarkable ODI career.
Here are 3 major milestones and records Rohit Sharma broke in 2nd ODI:
Rohit’s third major statistical achievement came alongside Shubman Gill.
The pair put together 255 runs for the first wicket, which became India’s second-highest opening partnership in men’s ODI cricket. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly’s 258-run stand against Kenya in 2001 remains higher.
The partnership was particularly remarkable considering the target India were chasing.
West Indies had posted 405/7 after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. India therefore required 406 runs, but Rohit and Gill immediately took the attack to the West Indies bowlers.
Rohit reached his half-century from just 32 balls, while Gill accelerated alongside him. India crossed 100 inside 12 overs before the opening pair continued their assault through the middle overs.
Their 255-run partnership eventually ended when Seales dismissed Rohit. By then, however, India had established complete control over the chase.
The stand also became India’s highest opening partnership in a successful ODI chase, adding another significant statistical achievement to Rohit’s evening.
Rohit’s 101 also created an age-related record.
At 39 years old, he became the oldest Indian batter to score an ODI century. The achievement underlined his ability to remain highly productive at the international level despite being in the latter stages of his career.
Rohit reached his 35th ODI century in 72 deliveries and accelerated further after completing three figures. His innings eventually ended when Jayden Seales trapped him lbw.
The record was particularly notable because Rohit had returned to the ODI setup in a changed role. Although Shubman Gill is now India’s captain in the format, Rohit continues to provide experience at the top of the order.
His century against West Indies demonstrated the value of that experience. The 39-year-old attacked the new ball, repeatedly found the boundary and helped India maintain the required run rate in a chase that initially appeared daunting.
Rohit’s ability to score a century at this stage of his career also adds another significant entry to his already extensive list of ODI records.
The biggest milestone from Rohit’s innings was his entry into the 12,000-run club in ODI cricket.
Rohit reached the landmark during India’s chase, becoming only the seventh batter overall and the third Indian to score 12,000 runs in men’s ODIs. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli had previously achieved the feat for India.
Rohit reached 12,000 runs in his 282nd ODI innings, making him the second-fastest batter to the landmark in terms of innings. Kohli had reached the milestone in 242 innings.
The timing of the achievement made it even more memorable. Rohit was batting alongside Gill, who was producing one of the greatest ODI innings ever witnessed. Rather than merely playing a supporting role, Rohit attacked from the beginning and ensured that India’s enormous target remained within reach.
The 12,000-run milestone is another reflection of Rohit’s extraordinary longevity in the 50-over format. His ODI career now includes more than 12,000 runs, hundreds and one of the highest individual scores in the format.
