The previous record belonged to Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who famously remained unbeaten on 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai.
Gill went past Maxwell’s mark during India’s extraordinary pursuit of West Indies’ 405/7. He eventually finished 22 runs ahead of Maxwell’s unbeaten 201, making his 223* the new benchmark for individual scores while chasing in men’s ODIs.
Gill’s achievement was even more remarkable because India’s target was 406. India eventually reached 409/2 in 43.3 overs, completing the second-highest successful chase in ODI history. South Africa’s chase of 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 remains the highest.
Gill also surpassed one of the most significant batting records held by former India captain Virender Sehwag.
His unbeaten 223 became the highest individual ODI score by an Indian captain. Sehwag had previously held the record after scoring 219 against the West Indies in Indore in 2011.
Gill’s innings therefore added another landmark to what has already been a remarkable ODI career. Interestingly, his record came against the same opposition against whom Sehwag had produced his 219.
The 223* also ranks among the highest individual scores ever recorded in men’s ODIs. According to Cricbuzz’s statistical breakdown, only Rohit Sharma’s 264 and Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 are higher than Gill’s score.
The knock also strengthened Gill’s record as a captain capable of producing substantial scores. He became the first captain to register a double century in both Test and ODI cricket, having previously scored 269 against England in Birmingham in 2025.
The biggest record Gill broke was the long-standing mark for the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket.
Gill reached the 200-run mark in only 117 balls, bettering the previous record held by his India teammate Ishan Kishan. Kishan had scored a double century off 126 deliveries against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.
Gill therefore reduced the previous record by nine balls, producing a remarkable acceleration after reaching his century. His first 100 runs came from 62 balls, but he needed only another 55 deliveries to add his second hundred.
The milestone was particularly significant because Gill did not simply slow down after reaching three figures. He continued attacking the West Indies bowling attack and eventually finished with an unbeaten 223. The 117-ball double century is now the fastest in men’s ODI cricket.
