Pakistan and Sri Lanka will renew their rivalry in the fifth match of the ODI tri-series on October 27 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. With England completing the three-team tournament, this encounter could prove important in determining which sides advance to the final.
Pakistan will look to make the most of their home advantage, while Sri Lanka will enter the contest with confidence after producing a remarkable run chase against England. The visitors chased down 430 runs, with Pavan Rathnayake scoring 130 and Dasun Shanaka smashing 97 off just 50 deliveries. Pakistan, meanwhile, began the tri-series with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka, powered by Salman Ali Agha’s century.
Here are 3 player battles to watch out in Match 5:
The battle between Babar Azam and Dushmantha Chameera could be crucial to Pakistan’s chances of posting a formidable total. Babar remains an important part of Pakistan’s batting plans, with his ability to build an innings and control the middle overs making him a key wicket for Sri Lanka.
Chameera, meanwhile, brings pace and bounce to the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The right-arm fast bowler can challenge batters with deliveries that move away from the right-hander, while his ability to attack the stumps makes him dangerous with the new ball.
Sri Lanka will want Chameera to prevent Babar from settling into his preferred rhythm. By maintaining a disciplined line outside off stump and varying his lengths, the pacer could force the Pakistan batter into playing risky shots. Early movement would make the contest even more challenging for Babar.
For the Pakistani batter, patience will be essential. Rather than forcing the scoring rate immediately, he could look to rotate the strike and punish loose deliveries. Once established, Babar’s timing and placement could help him take control of the innings.
If Chameera dismisses Babar early, Sri Lanka could expose Pakistan’s middle order before it settles. However, a substantial contribution from the former Pakistan captain would give the hosts a strong platform.
Pavan Rathnayake will be one of Sri Lanka’s batters to watch after his sensational performance against England. The young batter scored 130 during Sri Lanka’s successful chase of 430, demonstrating his ability to combine composure with aggressive strokeplay. His innings gave Sri Lanka a memorable victory and strengthened his case as a key player in the tournament.
Pakistan could look to Haris Rauf to disrupt Rathnayake’s momentum. Rauf’s pace and attacking approach make him a potential threat, particularly when the batter is looking to accelerate. He can use hard lengths to rush batters and yorkers to target the base of the stumps during the death overs.
Rathnayake’s challenge will be to maintain the positive intent that served him so well against England without taking unnecessary risks. If he can handle Rauf’s pace and find gaps in the field, Sri Lanka could build another competitive total.
Pakistan, however, will be aware that allowing Rathnayake to settle could be costly. Rauf will need support from his fielders and must avoid predictable lengths that the batter can exploit.
This contest could be especially important during the middle overs, when Sri Lanka will want to build a platform for another late-innings surge. If Rauf removes Rathnayake before he gets going, Pakistan could significantly restrict the visitors’ scoring potential.
The duel between Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis could set the tone for the visitors’ innings. Shaheen’s ability to swing the new ball makes him a major threat during the powerplay, while Mendis has the experience and attacking instincts to counter an aggressive bowling spell.
Mendis has been a key figure in Sri Lanka’s batting line-up and will be expected to provide stability at the top of the order. His ability to find boundaries and rotate the strike could help Sri Lanka recover from early setbacks or establish a strong foundation.
Shaheen will look to exploit any movement available at Gaddafi Stadium. His trademark deliveries angling into right-handers, followed by balls moving away, could test Mendis’ judgement outside off stump. The Pakistan captain will also be eager to strike early and put pressure on Sri Lanka’s middle order.
Mendis, meanwhile, must resist the temptation to chase deliveries away from his body. If he can negotiate Shaheen’s opening spell and capitalise on scoring opportunities, he could help Sri Lanka dictate the tempo.
The stakes are high for both captains. An early dismissal of Mendis would allow Pakistan to attack the middle order, while a confident start from the Sri Lankan skipper could force Shaheen to rethink his bowling plans.
