1st T20I | Afghanistan tour of India 2026 | Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi | 13 September 2026
Bumrah returning to competitive cricket for the first time since March means one contest decides more than any other on Saturday: how he handles Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran inside the first six overs. Gurbaz has scored at a strike rate above 179 all year, Zadran has quietly become one of the more reliable starts in world T20 cricket, and neither has faced a bowler with Bumrah’s control in months. Arun Jaitley Stadium usually punishes pace early too, which only raises the stakes on both sides of this specific matchup.
Bumrah hasn’t played a T20I since lifting the World Cup in March, when he closed out the final against New Zealand with 4 for 15, the best figures of his T20I career. That tournament produced 14 wickets in eight matches, joint top of the charts, at an economy of 6.21.
His return to the squad was confirmed on September 1, though it still carries a fitness clearance condition from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. Across 95 T20Is, he has taken 121 wickets at an average of 18.08, numbers that explain why India waited for him.
Against Afghanistan specifically, he has previous form worth remembering: four overs for 7 runs and three wickets in a T20 World Cup meeting two years ago, an economy of 1.75 that Afghanistan’s batters will not have forgotten.
Everything about this opener hinges on the first six overs. If Gurbaz and Zadran get through the powerplay untroubled, the equation for the rest of the innings changes completely, and India know it.
Both openers arrive with genuinely strong recent form behind them, not just reputation. Whether that form survives an opening burst from a bowler who’s been out of T20I cricket for six months is the actual story of this fixture, regardless of how the rest of the fifteen-man squad performs across the three matches.
Gurbaz walks into Delhi in the form of his career. His 2026 calendar year alone has produced 947 runs at a strike rate of 179.69 across 24 matches, including two centuries and seven fifties, numbers that put him among the most destructive openers anywhere in the format right now.
Zadran’s route here looks different but is just as effective. His 95 not out off 56 balls against Canada at this year’s World Cup was the standout, and across his 65-match T20I career he averages 33.30 at a strike rate close to 113. Neither man’s numbers specifically against fast bowling in the powerplay are broken out anywhere, which makes Saturday’s opening exchanges even more of an open question.
The one piece of head-to-head history that exists actually favors Bumrah, not either batter.
| Stat | Gurbaz / Zadran | Bumrah |
| Career T20I numbers | Gurbaz 2,000+ runs, avg 34, SR 134.83; Zadran 1,869 runs, avg 33.30, SR 112.88 | 121 wickets in 95 T20Is, avg 18.08 |
| 2026 form | Gurbaz 947 runs, SR 179.69; Zadran 95* vs Canada at the World Cup | 14 wickets in 8 World Cup matches, econ 6.21 |
| Head-to-head result | Gurbaz dismissed for 11 in the 2024 World Cup; Zadran not out to Bumrah that match | 3 for 7 vs Gurbaz; no recorded wicket vs Zadran |
That solitary data point, Bumrah removing Gurbaz cheaply while Zadran got the better of him, is thin evidence on its own. It won’t decide Saturday, but it’s the only precedent either camp actually has to lean on.
Delhi’s pitch has a reputation that should worry both sets of batters more than it worries the bowlers. The average first innings score across seven T20Is here sits at 164, with the highest total, 212 for 3, coming from South Africa against India back in 2022.
Powerplay scoring runs consistently high, somewhere north of ten runs an over by most estimates, which usually means an early bowler who can actually control the ball has more room to hurt batters than the raw economy figures suggest. Teams batting first have generally fared well at this venue too, for whatever that trend is worth in a bilateral series.
All of which sets up exactly the kind of surface where the story of this India vs Afghanistan T20I series 2026 Bumrah matchup gets decided in the first thirty minutes, not the last ten.
