Derek Underwood occupies a unique place in cricket history. Officially a left-arm spinner, he bowled at a pace that often blurred the distinction between spin and seam. His method was built on relentless accuracy, subtle variation and an arm ball that hurried batters into mistakes. Across 86 Tests for England, he collected 297 wickets and established himself as one of the most effective bowlers of the post-war era. Few bowlers have combined consistency and match-winning impact as successfully as Underwood did over a career that stretched from 1966 to 1982.
What separated Underwood from many of his contemporaries was his ability to decide matches. England won 27 of the Tests in which he played, and in those victories he claimed 123 wickets at an average of just 15.02. Whether conditions favoured bowlers or not, captains knew they could rely on him to break partnerships and force results. Among his many achievements, three performances stand out as the finest examples of his skill, control and influence on the outcome of a Test match.
The fifth Ashes Test of 1968 appeared destined for a draw after heavy rain flooded large parts of The Oval on the final afternoon. England still needed five wickets to level the series, and with limited time remaining, Australia’s lower order looked capable of surviving. Once play resumed, however, conditions became perfectly suited to Underwood’s strengths. Bowling on a drying surface that offered unpredictable movement, he produced one of the most famous spells in Ashes history.
Underwood claimed the last four wickets in just 27 deliveries and finished with figures of 7 for 50. His final victim was John Inverarity, trapped lbw by a trademark arm ball with only minutes remaining in the match. England secured a dramatic victory and squared the series. More than half a century later, the spell remains one of the defining moments of Ashes cricket and the performance most commonly associated with the nickname “Deadly”.
If the Oval performance was Underwood’s most famous, his display against Pakistan at Lord’s in 1974 was arguably his most complete. Pakistan batted first and found themselves unable to cope with his accuracy and pace. Underwood dismantled the middle order to finish with 5 for 20 in the first innings, giving England a significant advantage in the contest.
His second-innings effort was even better. Pakistan were reasonably placed before Underwood ripped through the batting line-up, taking 8 for 51 and ending with extraordinary match figures of 13 for 71. At one stage he captured six wickets for just two runs in a devastating sequence. The figures remain his best in Test cricket and rank among the finest bowling performances ever produced at Lord’s.
A year after his Ashes heroics, Underwood produced his first ten-wicket match haul in Test cricket when New Zealand toured England. The Lord’s pitch offered assistance, but it was Underwood’s precision that transformed a helpful surface into a nightmare for the visiting batters. He claimed four wickets in the first innings and immediately put England in control of the match.
The second innings brought an even greater exhibition of bowling mastery. Underwood took 7 for 32, repeatedly defeating batters with changes of pace and trajectory. Several New Zealand players struggled to judge length and movement, and England completed a crushing 230-run victory. Match figures of 11 for 70 confirmed Underwood’s emergence as the leading spinner in world cricket and marked the first of six ten-wicket hauls he would take during his Test career.
