Dublin Guardians and Edinburgh Castle Rockers will renew their rivalry in Match 21 of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026 at Malahide on September 11. The encounter will be particularly interesting after Edinburgh defeated Dublin by four wickets in their previous meeting at Voorburg. 

The Rockers produced a dominant bowling performance in that contest, restricting Dublin to 109 before chasing down the target with 38 balls to spare. Mitchell Santner was the chief architect of the victory, claiming a stunning five-wicket haul, while Trent Boult also picked up two wickets.

Here are three player battles to watch out for in Match 21 of ETPL 2026:

1. James Vince vs Trent Boult

One of the most intriguing battles could take place right at the beginning of the innings, with James Vince expected to face Trent Boult with the new ball.

Vince is one of Dublin’s most technically accomplished batters and is capable of scoring rapidly without taking excessive risks. The Englishman scored 40 off 30 balls in the previous meeting between the sides and was one of the few Guardians batters to establish himself at the crease.

However, Boult is precisely the kind of bowler who can disrupt Vince’s rhythm early. The New Zealand left-armer possesses exceptional control and movement with the new ball and has already demonstrated his ability to make early breakthroughs in ETPL 2026.

In the previous encounter, Boult dismissed Muhammad Waseem early, setting the tone for Edinburgh’s bowling effort.

Vince will therefore have to be particularly watchful outside the off stump, while Boult will look to attack him with movement before changing his lengths. If Vince survives the opening spell, Dublin could gain a significant advantage.

2. Daryl Mitchell vs Mitchell Santner

The battle between Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner could decide the middle overs.

The two New Zealand stars know each other’s games extremely well, having played together internationally for years. However, familiarity could make this contest even more fascinating, with Santner likely to use his knowledge of Mitchell’s batting approach when bowling to him.

Santner was sensational in the previous meeting, taking 5/16 in four overs. His victims included Daryl Mitchell, Benjamin Calitz, George Dockrell, James Vince and Matt Hollard. 

Mitchell, meanwhile, will have to find a way to disrupt Santner’s rhythm. The Dublin all-rounder is capable of attacking spin with power and using his strong base to hit into the gaps or over the boundary.

Santner’s accuracy makes him difficult to attack conventionally, so Mitchell could look to use his feet or target the shorter boundary. If he can negate Santner’s spell, Dublin could prevent Edinburgh from building the same level of pressure they did in the first meeting.

3. Andries Gous vs Josh Little

The contest between Andries Gous and Josh Little promises to be another fascinating battle, particularly during the powerplay.

Gous is one of the most aggressive batters in Edinburgh’s lineup. The USA international has the ability to take on fast bowlers and can quickly change the complexion of an innings if he gets a few deliveries in his hitting zone. Edinburgh’s squad is built around attacking players such as Gous, Ross Adair, Brandon McMullen and Laurie Evans.

Little, however, will provide Dublin with a completely different challenge for Gous. The Irish left-arm quick has the pace and movement required to attack the stumps while also making use of angles across the right-hander.

For Dublin, getting Gous early could be crucial. Edinburgh have considerable batting depth, but removing one of their most destructive top-order options would immediately put pressure on the middle order.

Gous, on the other hand, will know that surviving Little’s opening spell could open up opportunities against Dublin’s other bowlers. His ability to score boundaries during the powerplay could once again give Edinburgh the initiative.
