France’s defence holds the edge, because it has not conceded a goal this Nations League campaign, while Italy’s four goals all arrived in one night. On Friday, 2 October, those facts meet at the Stade de France in Group A1. France have faced five shots on target in two games and Mike Maignan saved every one. Italy’s attack carries real volume, but volume has produced goals in only one of two matches. Kick-off is 8:45 pm CEST, which is 12:45 am Saturday in Bangladesh.
France lead Group A1 on six points after two 1-0 wins, at Türkiye and at Belgium. Belgium and Italy are level on three, while Türkiye have none. Italy lost 2-0 at home to Belgium on matchday one, then beat Türkiye 4-1 in Bursa. Friday is also Zinedine Zidane’s first home match as France coach.
France’s margins are thin: both wins were 1-0, and the second needed Michael Olise’s 88th-minute goal. Italy’s results swing harder, a 2-0 home defeat followed by a 4-1 win.

Reading the France vs Italy Nations League 2026 clash
The numbers point in opposite directions. France have faced 24 shots in two games, 12 per match, and only five were on target; Mike Maignan saved all five. Italy have taken 35 shots, 17.5 per match, with 14 on target, yet Belgium shut them out despite 21 attempts. France themselves have scored only twice.
Italy’s problem against Belgium was conversion, not creation: 21 attempts and no goal. France’s problem is the reverse, with two goals in two games from a side that dominates the ball. Something has to give on Friday: either France concede their first goal or Italy leave without scoring.
France control games rather than weather them. In Brussels they had 65% possession, completed 681 passes at 92% accuracy and allowed Belgium 12 shots, only two on target, before Michael Olise scored in the 88th minute. At Türkiye, France held 64% of the ball and conceded three shots on target.
The line is thinner than the record suggests. Ibrahima Konaté withdrew with a knee problem, and Leny Yoro replaced him; William Saliba is out of the squad, and Jérémy Jacquet partnered Maxence Lacroix in Brussels. Zidane made nine changes there, keeping only Maignan and Lacroix, and the clean sheet survived.
Even so, the pattern is consistent. High possession keeps the ball away from the back four, and Maignan has saved every shot on target that reached him.
Italy’s four goals in Bursa came from four players: Alessandro Bastoni (9th minute), Davide Frattesi (22nd), Michael Kayode (27th) and Pio Esposito (50th). Bastoni’s opener followed a corner. The other three came from open play: Frattesi and Kayode finished quick moves down the right, and Esposito headed in a rebound after Sandro Tonali hit the post.
Their threat is speed of combination; their weakness is what they leave behind. Italy have conceded three and kept no clean sheet. Centre-backs Gianluca Mancini and Diego Coppola mixed up for Belgium’s opener, and Belgium’s second came on the counter-attack. That mix is why Italy remain dangerous even against a side that rarely concedes. One quick move down the right can undo a patient defensive plan. Pace on the right is the clearest warning.
The stronger case belongs to the French back line. It has faced only five shots on target, has not conceded, and plays at home, while Italy’s volume has produced goals in just one of two games, against a Türkiye goalkeeper who erred twice. Belgium shut Italy out.
History is no guide. Italy lead the series, but France have won four of the last five, and each side won 3-1 away in the 2024 Nations League. The risk for France is depth: without Konaté and Saliba, one lapse could cost the clean sheet. France’s centre-backs will need to repeat their Brussels discipline against a quicker attack.
Expect the French defence to decide the France vs Italy Nations League 2026 clash, with Italy’s attack the only thing capable of overturning it.
