Prabhsimran Singh arrives in stronger batting form than either bowler. He scored 510 IPL runs this year at a strike rate above 168, including an 80 off 39 balls against Mumbai Indians, and followed it with 443 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His case rests entirely on Ishan Kishan needing a rest rather than any batting slot opening up on merit alone.
Management have already shown intent to test bench strength on this tour, naming concussion substitutes by position before matches even started, a small but telling sign of planned rotation. Whether that translates into actual changes at Harare on Sunday is the real question hanging over the finale.
If India rest anyone from an already winning combination, Thakur is the bowler most likely to finally get his chance, while Prabhsimran’s opportunity depends squarely on whether Kishan is rotated out of the wicketkeeping role.
