LA Knight Riders vs MI New York | MLC 2026 | Fairplex, Pomona | 5 July 2026
LA Knight Riders‘ new home ground hasn’t given them anything to celebrate yet. Their only match at Fairplex so far ended in a heavy defeat, and now MI New York arrive off the back of a genuinely encouraging win of their own. Whoever finds an edge in Pomona will need it fast, because both sides carry unresolved questions into this one, from a captaincy debate to a head-to-head record nobody involved can quite agree on right now heading in.
LA Knight Riders lost the first-ever MLC match played at Fairplex, bowled out for 108 as Washington Freedom chased it down by 6 wickets on 1 July, their third straight defeat of the season. Rovman Powell’s 30 off 19 balls, with 2 fours and 2 sixes, was the only real resistance in an otherwise abject batting display.
The conditions didn’t help either side settle. The match produced 218 combined runs for the loss of 14 wickets across 37.1 overs, tough going for batters in the venue’s opening fixture, and with only one match played there so far, no multi-match scoring average exists for the ground yet.
Only one of LA Knight Riders’ three scheduled home fixtures at Fairplex has been played as of this research date. The other two, against Texas Super Kings on 3 July and MI New York on 5 July, are still to come.
| Player | Team | Recent Form | Key Stat |
| Rovman Powell | LA Knight Riders | 30 (19b) in loss vs Freedom, 1 July | 8 sixes in 5 matches, 102 runs total |
| Nicholas Pooran | MI New York | 70 (58b) vs LA Knight Riders, 28 June | Averages 76.00 this season |
| Quinton de Kock | MI New York | 33 (17b) vs LA Knight Riders, 28 June | 80 aggregate runs across 4 appearances |
| Trent Boult | MI New York | 3/18 vs Texas Super Kings | 5.40 season economy rate |
| Monank Patel | MI New York | 46 (34b) vs Texas Super Kings | Anchored a 50-plus stand with Pooran |
MI New York’s stronger recent numbers across the board give them the edge on paper heading into Pomona, though Fairplex itself remains a genuine unknown for both sides.
MI New York’s most recent completed result was an 8-wicket win over Texas Super Kings, their first of the season. Pooran finished unbeaten on 68 off 51 balls, Monank Patel made 46, and the bowling was shared between Boult’s 3 for 18 and Corbin Bosch’s 4 for 29.
De Kock made 26 off 16 balls in that chase, sharing a 49-run stand with Patel before Patel went on to anchor a further 50-plus partnership with Pooran that sealed the win. Boult’s dismissal of Smit Patel in that match was also his 50th first-over wicket in T20s among matches where ball-by-ball data is available.
There’s a genuine discrepancy over who leads MI New York this season. One published squad list names Kieron Pollard as captain, but the team’s own official site confirms Nicholas Pooran in the role, including coverage identifying him as captain following a match.
Given the team’s own channel is the most recent and directly sourced account, Pooran is treated as captain for this preview, though the conflicting listing is worth flagging for anyone cross-checking squad sheets elsewhere.
The head-to-head record between these two sides can’t be pinned to a single figure either. One team page lists two meetings with LA Knight Riders winning both, another lists three meetings with MI New York winning two and LA Knight Riders one, and a third source lists three meetings with MI New York winning all three.
No single tally can be confirmed as definitively correct across those sources, but the common ground is consistent: MI New York have never lost more than one of their meetings with LA Knight Riders, and LA Knight Riders’ record against them sits at no better than one win. That imbalance, layered on top of everything else still unresolved this week, is exactly why the LA Knight Riders vs MI New York MLC 2026 players contest at Fairplex carries so much riding on individual form rather than history.
