Namibia will begin their campaign in the Namibia T20I Tri-Series 2026 when they take on South Africa in the opening match at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Friday, August 28. The hosts will be eager to make a strong start in a tournament that also features Zimbabwe.
Namibia have named a strong squad for the home assignment, with experienced campaigners such as captain Gerhard Erasmus, Jan Frylinck, JJ Smit, Ruben Trumpelmann, Bernard Scholtz and Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton forming the core of the team. The squad also includes exciting youngsters, including Junior Taanyanda, Max Heingo and Waldo Smith.
The hosts have enjoyed an encouraging run in T20I cricket since the 2026 T20 World Cup, winning five of their last seven matches. They will therefore fancy their chances against a young South African side led by Bjorn Fortuin.
Here is the predicted playing XI of Namibia for Match 1 against South Africa:
Michael van Lingen could make his return to the T20I setup by opening the innings.
The left-handed batter has returned to Namibia’s squad after a two-year absence and brings valuable experience to the top order. His comeback is particularly interesting because Namibia have opted for a blend of proven performers and emerging youngsters for this tri-series.
Van Lingen will be expected to provide an aggressive start and take advantage of the Powerplay restrictions.
Junior Taanyanda is likely to partner van Lingen at the top of the order.
The 21-year-old is one of Namibia’s most exciting prospects. He made his T20I debut in June during the tri-series involving Hong Kong, China and Nigeria and finished that tournament as the leading run-scorer.
His ability to score quickly makes him an ideal partner for the experienced van Lingen.
Zane Green should slot in at No. 3 and take responsibility for wicketkeeping.
The left-handed batter has been a regular part of Namibia’s white-ball setup and provides stability in the top and middle order. Against South Africa’s inexperienced bowling attack, Green could be given the freedom to play positively.
His work behind the stumps will also be important against a Namibia attack that relies heavily on spin and variations.
Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton is expected to occupy the middle order.
The aggressive left-hander is one of Namibia’s most dangerous T20 batters and has the ability to change the momentum of an innings quickly. His experience at international level makes him an important player for the hosts.
Loftie-Eaton can also contribute with the ball, giving captain Erasmus an additional tactical option.
Captain Gerhard Erasmus will be one of the most important players for Namibia.
The experienced all-rounder has been a cornerstone of Namibia’s rise in international cricket and will once again have a major role with both bat and ball. He is particularly effective at controlling the middle overs with his off-spin.
His leadership will also be crucial against a young South African team that includes several players looking to establish themselves internationally.
Jan Frylinck should continue in the lower middle order.
The left-handed all-rounder has more than 100 international appearances and brings considerable experience to the Namibia lineup.
Frylinck can provide valuable runs during the middle and death overs while also contributing with his left-arm seam bowling.
His ability to perform multiple roles makes him an important part of Namibia’s balance.
JJ Smit is expected to retain his place as another experienced all-rounder.
The left-hander is one of Namibia’s most dependable lower-order hitters and can clear the boundaries when the innings requires acceleration. His medium pace also provides Erasmus with another bowling option.
Smit’s experience in pressure situations could prove valuable against South Africa.
JC Balt could be Namibia’s main specialist spin option.
Balt was one of the standout bowlers during Namibia’s most recent T20I series and has earned a place in the squad after producing impressive performances. The ICC highlighted him as one of the players to watch heading into the tri-series.
His ability to pick up wickets in the middle overs could be crucial against South Africa’s aggressive young batters.
Bernard Scholtz is likely to lead the spin attack alongside Erasmus.
The experienced left-arm spinner has been one of Namibia’s most reliable bowlers for several years and has more than 100 international appearances.
Scholtz’s accuracy allows him to build pressure from one end while Erasmus or the seamers attack from the other.
Ruben Trumpelmann should spearhead Namibia’s pace attack.
The left-arm quick has been one of the country’s leading fast bowlers and offers a genuine wicket-taking threat with the new ball. His ability to swing the ball and generate awkward angles could make life difficult for South Africa’s inexperienced top order.
Trumpelmann’s role will be particularly important during the Powerplay.
Jack Brassell could complete Namibia’s playing XI as the second specialist seamer.
The young fast bowler gives Erasmus another pace option alongside Trumpelmann and can be used during the middle and death overs.
Namibia also have teenage seamers Max Heingo and Waldo Smith in the squad, but Heingo has already played 10 T20Is while Smith has five appearances, meaning both remain realistic alternatives if the team opts for additional youth.
Michael van Lingen, Junior Taanyanda, Zane Green (WK), Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton, Gerhard Erasmus (C), Jan Frylinck, JJ Smit, JC Balt, Bernard Scholtz, Ruben Trumpelmann, Jack Brassell
