On July 7, 1984, one of Bangladesh cricket’s most gifted talents, Mohammad Ashraful, was born in Dhaka. Widely regarded as Bangladesh’s first genuine cricketing superstar, Ashraful captured the imagination of fans with his fearless batting and extraordinary talent. While his career was filled with unforgettable highs, it also ended in disappointment following his involvement in the Bangladesh Premier League spot-fixing scandal.
Ashraful announced himself to the cricketing world in spectacular fashion in 2001. Making his Test debut against Sri Lanka, the teenage batter smashed a brilliant century to become the youngest player ever to score a Test hundred on debut at just 17 years of age.
Scoring a century against an attack featuring legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan made the achievement even more remarkable. The knock instantly turned him into Bangladesh’s biggest cricketing hope, with many believing he would become the country’s answer to Sachin Tendulkar.
Although consistency remained a challenge throughout his career, Ashraful produced several innings that are still remembered fondly by cricket fans.
His unbeaten 158 against India in Chattogram in 2004 earned praise from former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who described it as one of the finest innings he had witnessed.
A year later, Ashraful stunned the cricketing world with a magnificent century against defending world champions Australia in Cardiff. His match-winning hundred helped Bangladesh register one of the biggest upsets in ODI history.
He also played a breathtaking knock of 87 against South Africa in the 2007 ODI World Cup, showcasing his fearless approach against one of the strongest bowling attacks in world cricket.
Ashraful represented Bangladesh across all three formats for over a decade.
He played 61 Tests, scoring 2,737 runs at an average of 24.00, including six centuries and eight half-centuries. In 177 ODIs, he amassed 3,468 runs, with three centuries and 20 fifties. He also featured in 23 T20Is, scoring 450 runs.
One of his unique achievements was holding the record for the fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi batter in all three international formats, Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, a testament to his naturally attacking style of play.
Ashraful also captained Bangladesh across formats after the 2007 World Cup. However, his leadership stint was short-lived as both his form and the team’s performances declined, leading to his removal as captain in 2009.
Just when it appeared Ashraful had rediscovered his best form, his career took a dramatic turn.
In 2013, he admitted his involvement in spot-fixing during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The scandal shocked the cricketing world and resulted in his suspension from all forms of cricket. The talented batter later received a ban, effectively bringing an end to his international career.
The controversy remains one of the darkest chapters in Bangladesh cricket history and continues to shape how Ashraful’s legacy is viewed.
Despite the disappointing ending, Mohammad Ashraful will always be remembered as the player who inspired a generation of Bangladeshi cricketers. His brilliance with the bat showed the world that Bangladesh could produce world-class talent, making him one of the most influential figures in the country’s cricketing journey.
