Records were shattered aplenty as India beat England by a massive 336-run margin at Edgbaston on July 6, 2025. This was a new-look Indian side’s first win under the leadership of Shubman Gill, and what better feat to achieve in your first win as Test skipper than lead the Men in Blue’s first-ever Test victory in Birmingham.
India came into this Test with a chip on their shoulder, being 1-0 down after the Three Lions chased down 373 in the first Test at Headingley. All eyes were on the Indian side, that were without the rested Jasprit Bumrah, with Akash Deep taking his place. England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first on a surface which was on the flatter end.
India were at 95 for 2 when Gill, fresh off a magnificent 147 in the first Test, walked out to the middle. He started cautiously, reaching his half-century off 125 balls, before taking the attack to the England bowlers once joined by Ravindra Jadeja. The pair looked in complete control as they put on a mammoth 203-run stand for the seventh wicket, off just 279 balls. Cashing in on a flat wicket, Gill put the tired England bowlers to the sword, scoring at over run-a-ball in a 144-run stand with Washington Sundar. He reached his double-century off 311 balls before falling for 269, the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket. India finished their innings on a massive 587.
The Three Lions were reeling at 84 for 5, with Stokes, Ollie Pope, and Headingley Player of the Match Ben Duckett dismissed for ducks. Harry Brook was joined by Jamie Smith, with England in a severe spot of bother. The pair stitched a massive 303-run stand off just 368 balls. The English rearguard was finally broken after Brook was bowled for 158 by Akash Deep. The final three English batters fell for ducks to Mohammed Siraj, who finished with 6 for 70 in 20 overs, and Deep finished with 4 for 88. Smith remained unbeaten on 184 as England were bowled out for 407.
India piled more misery on England with an 180-run lead, with Gill once again in the act, scoring an almost run-a-ball unbeaten 161, finishing the game with 430 runs. India declared their innings on 427 for 6, leaving the Three Lions a massive total of 608. It was the Akash Deep show in the fourth innings, as he removed four of England’s top five to leave them reeling at 83 for 5. Smith once again put up a rearguard act, scoring a 99-ball 88, but was unable to stop his team from being bowled out for 271. Deep finished the innings with figures of 6 for 99, taking his match figures to 10 for 187.
India’s 336-run win, their first at Edgbaston, was their highest victory margin by runs in an away Test. Gill’s 430-run match aggregate was the second highest by a batter in a Test, behind Graham Gooch’s 456 against India at Lord’s in 1990. India’s 1014-run aggregate for the match was the first time they scored over 1000 runs in a match, and the fourth-highest match aggregate. Akash Deep’s 10 for 187 were the best match figures for an Indian bowler in England. With the team coming off the back of the high-profile retirements of Rohit Sharma, Gill led his team from the front with a statement performance for the ages.
