Considered one of the finest all-rounders in the early annals of Indian cricket, Chandu Borde was one of the key cogs of an era where Indian cricket was finding its feet and establishing itself across the map. The elegant batter and leg-spin bowler was once regarded as one of the finest batting talents to come out of the country, and as his career progressed, he grew in importance and stature within the team.
Born in Pune to a Marathi Christian family, Borde made his domestic debut in the 1952/53 season, playing for Maharashtra before switching allegiances to Baroda. He made his debut when the West Indies toured India for five tests, playing the first two outings before being dropped for the third. He returned for the fourth and fifth tests, when he recorded scores of 109 and 96 in the final Test in a drawn game, his breakthrough innings.
Borde was instrumental in India’s 2-0 series triumph in the Test series against England in 1961/62. He scored 314 runs with three half-centuries and picked up 16 wickets in the five games across the series, which included scores of 68 and 61 in India’s victory at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. A fine player of pace bowling, he was able to negotiate against quality seamers and score runs in a free manner.
He took a fondness to playing against New Zealand, who toured India in 1964/65. The all-rounder scored 371 runs in the series across four matches, scoring a stunning 109 in the third Test at the Brabourne Stadium. After being made to follow on after being bowled out for 88, Borde supported Dilip Sardesai, who scored a mammoth 200 to take India to a score of 253 for 8. India won the final match of that series to clinch a 1-0 win, where Borde scored a brilliant 87 off just 118 balls.
Borde’s peak perhaps came during the 1966/67 series against the West Indies, where he scored 345 runs in three matches, averaging 57.50. He recorded scores of 121 and 125 in the first and third Tests, but was unable to stop the West Indies from clinching the series 2-0. Borde even captained India in one Test match against Australia in the absence of Nawab Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.
With form concerns and poor returns plaguing the latter end of his career, and facing a significant diminishing of reflexes by the end of the decade, Borde was dropped, with the management favouring younger players, losing his place to Karnataka’s Gundappa Vishwanath. Following his retirement, Borde worked in multiple administrative roles, as team manager and serving two terms as chief national selector.
Borde has scored over 12000 runs in first-class cricket and was a stalwart across the domestic and international game. His record of 1,604 runs, the msit by an Indian batter in a first class season, in 1964/65, was a record which stood tall until it was broken by another batting stalwart in Cheteshwar Pujara in 2016/17.
