One of Pakistan’s finest batters and among the most elegant stroke-makers the game has ever witnessed, Zaheer Abbas was born on July 24, 1947, in Sialkot, Punjab (now in Pakistan). Fondly known as the ‘Asian Bradman’, Abbas earned global admiration for his impeccable timing, graceful batting technique, and remarkable consistency.
He also stood out as one of the few international cricketers who regularly wore spectacles while batting, a distinctive feature that became synonymous with his iconic image. In recognition of his immense contribution to the sport, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2020.
Zaheer made his Test debut for Pakistan against New Zealand in 1969, but it was only in his second Test that he announced himself on the world stage. Facing England, he compiled a magnificent 274, which remains the sixth-highest individual Test score by a Pakistani batter. That innings showcased his extraordinary ability to dominate quality bowling through precision and flawless stroke play rather than brute force.
Over the course of his illustrious Test career, Abbas registered four double centuries, a feat surpassed by only two Pakistani batters. One of his most memorable achievements came during the 1982-83 series against India, when he scored 215 and went on to record three consecutive Test centuries. That landmark innings also brought up his 100th first-class century, making him only the second cricketer, alongside England’s Geoffrey Boycott, to reach the three-figure mark of first-class hundreds during a Test match.
Abbas was equally prolific in domestic cricket. Representing Gloucestershire in English county cricket, he amassed more than 16,000 first-class runs, including 49 centuries, becoming one of the county’s greatest overseas professionals. Another unique record to his name is being the only player in first-class cricket history to score both a century and a double century in the same season on four separate occasions.
In international cricket, Zaheer featured in 78 Tests, scoring 5,062 runs at an average of over 44, including 12 centuries and 20 half-centuries. He was equally effective in the limited-overs format, accumulating 2,572 runs in 62 One-Day Internationals, with seven centuries, making him one of the premier ODI batters of his era. Across all first-class cricket, his numbers are staggering, 34,843 runs in 459 matches at an average of 51.54, highlighted by 108 centuries and 158 fifties.
Abbas briefly captained Pakistan in 1981 and 1984 before retiring from international cricket in 1985. His farewell, however, was far from ideal. After announcing his retirement from Test cricket, he hoped to continue representing Pakistan in One-Day Internationals, but the selectors decided otherwise. As a result, he missed the opportunity for a fitting send-off, something many cricket followers believe a player of his stature richly deserved.
Even after retirement, Abbas remained deeply involved in the sport. He served as an ICC match referee, officiating in one Test and several ODIs, before being elected ICC President in 2015. Beyond cricket administration, he also co-authored his autobiography, Zed, with renowned British cricket writer David Foot in 1983.
