Hand-picked stories you can't miss

If anyone must be credited with putting New Zealand cricket on the map, then it should be Sir Richard Hadlee. Probably New Zealand’s first ‘global cricketing superstar’, Hadlee established himself as one of the finest fast bowlers of his generation, becoming the first-ever seamer to pick up 400 Test wickets.
His career reads as follows: 431 Test wickets in 150 innings, averaging 22.29, with 36 five-wicket hauls and best innings figures of 9 for 52. While not being able to replicate similar numbers in ODI cricket, he still boasts 158 wickets at 21.56 in 112 innings.
Hadlee has been regarded as one of the finest exponents of the new ball, relying on conventional swing. Making his debut for Canterbury in 1973 and his New Zealand debut in 1973, Hadlee registered himself to prominence with an 11-wicket match haul against India in 1976 in Wellington, ripping a strong Indian batting lineup apart for 81 with figures of 7 for 23 in the second innings.
In 1979/80, New Zealand’s 1-0 victory in a series against the West Indies started a 12-year unbeaten home run for the Kiwis. They won the first Test of the series, with Hadlee picking up 11 wickets in the match, which is regarded as one of his finest performances.
In his career, his records against Australia and England stand out the most. He was one of the finest performers in the Trans–Tasman rivalry, picking up 130 wickets in 23 matches, which includes his career-best match haul of 15 for 123 in Brisbane in 1985. He picked up his best innings figures of 9 for 52 in the same game. He has 97 wickets in 21 matches against the Three Lions, averaging 24.73.
Hadlee was also a fine batter and was regarded as one of the four best all-rounders of the generation, alongside Imran Khan, Kapil Dev and Sir Ian Botham. He has scored 3124 runs in 134 innings, averaging 27.16, with a career best score of 151* against Sri Lanka.
Hadlee called time on his career in 1990, ending a stellar 18-year span, aged 39. He was knighted the same year and inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009.
