Playing even a single Test match is a dream for every cricketer. However, only a handful of players go on to enjoy long careers in the longest format. On this day in 1968, England legend Colin Cowdrey etched his name into the history books by becoming the first cricketer ever to play 100 Test matches. The historic milestone came during the third Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston, Birmingham, making the occasion even more special given the fierce rivalry between the two nations.

The 1968 Ashes had already been an intense contest before the third Test. Australia had won the opening Test at Old Trafford by 159 runs, while the second Test at Lord’s ended in a draw after rain interrupted play.

The innings became even more remarkable because Cowdrey suffered a muscle strain during his knock. Despite the injury, he continued batting with Geoff Boycott running between the wickets for him for a significant part of the innings.

Cowdrey made his Test debut in 1954 and went on to enjoy one of the finest careers in English cricket. He eventually represented England in 114 Test matches, scoring 7,624 runs at an impressive average of 44.06. His record includes 22 centuries and 38 half-centuries, with a highest score of 182. He also established himself as one of the safest fielders of his era, taking 120 catches in Test cricket.
Although his ODI career lasted just one match, Cowdrey’s impact in first-class cricket was extraordinary. Across 692 first-class matches, he amassed 42,719 runs at an average of 42.89, including a staggering 107 centuries and 231 fifties, underlining his consistency across nearly two decades.
Cowdrey’s 100th Test was more than just a personal achievement. It proved that players could enjoy long and successful careers in the longest format through dedication, discipline, and sustained excellence.
