Standing at a whopping six feet and seven inches, Sulieman Benn was one of the most imposing cricketers from a physical standpoint. Built like a fast bowler, Benn was a reliable left-arm spinner for the West Indies across formats and was able to put his height to good use, generating uncanny bounce and turn due to his height, with the daunting prospect of facing him up on a dry wicket with helpful conditions. While he was primarily a left-arm spinner, he could also provide handy resistance with the bat and was known for his fiery temper, which ended up being the cause of several disciplinary issues.
Benn made his professional debut in the 1999/00 domestic season and toiled for years in the domestic circuits in the West Indies. His breakthrough finally came in the 2007/08 season, where he put on brilliant performances in the Carb Beer Cup and earned his call-up to the West Indies squad. He made his debut in the first Test against Sri Lanka in March 2008 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Benn went wicketless in the first innings, but picked up figures of 3 for 59 in the second innings, with his first scalp being that of Mahela Jayawardene.
Benn picked up his first five-wicket-haul against Australia in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, finishing with figures of 5 for 155 in a marathon 53-over spell. The 2010 T20 World Cup was a memorable one for Benn, where he picked up figures of 4 for 6 against Zimbabwe, becoming the first bowler to bowl two maidens in a match between two full-member sides, and also set the record for the highest 10th-wicket partnership in T20 World Cups, scoring 20 runs with Nikita Miller. He picked up his best Test figures of 6 for 81 in the third Test against South Africa in June 2010 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Benn was also known for his poor disciplinary record, with a host of incidents behind him. The third Test of the series against Australia saw him involved in altercations with Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin during the third Test in Perth. But his most infamous incident yet is his altercation with Dale Steyn in the Test in Bridgetown. Benn kept provoking the fiery fast bowler when the latter was out to bat, with tensions rising after Steyn spat on Benn while walking off after being dismissed. Ben was reprimanded by both Cricket South Africa and Cricket West Indies for the incident, with Steyn foregoing his entire match fee.
Benn was also part of the West Indies’ victorious 2016 T20 World Cup side, playing the entire tournament as their metronome spinner. Bowling in tandem with Samuel Badree, Benn was tasked with controlling the run flow, and despite picking up just two wickets, bowled at an economy rate of 6.81 throughout the tournament. His best figures of 1 for 18 came against Afghanistan in Nagpur.
