Yuzvendra Chahal is often considered one of India’s top white-ball spinners, being one of the first true finds of the IPL who have gone on to have an undoubtedly successful international career. A wicket-taking leg-spinner, foxing batters with smart changes of pace and variations in length, baiting batters into throwing their wickets away.
Chahal’s breakthrough in cricket came in the 2011 season of the Champions League T20, where he represented the Mumbai Indians. He was one of their top spinners in the tournament as they lifted the title, picking up figures of 2 for 9 from three overs in the final against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where the now five-time IPL champions defended a total of 140 to win by 31 runs. Chahal did not feature in the IPL for the team, but was part of their squads from 2011 to 2013.
Chahal was signed by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2014 for his base price of INR 10 lakhs. It is here that he established himself as one of Virat Kohli’s most reliable lieutenants, staying with the team for eight seasons. He is still RCB’s leading wicket-taker with 139 scalps from 113 matches.
An India debut came in 2016 against Zimbabwe in the ODI and T20I formats. In early 2017, Chahal picked up 6 for 25 in a T20I against England, figures which saw him break multiple records. He became the first Indian bowler to pick up a T20I five-wicket haul, and the second bowler in T20Is to pick up a six-wicket haul. His figures were also the best T20I figures by an Indian bowler at the time, and now sit in second place on the list.
Chahal soon became a vital cog of India’s white-ball machine, forming a dangerous and highly effective duo with Kuldeep Yadav. Nicknamed ‘Kul-cha’, the pair were at their destructive best against South Africa in the six-match ODI series in 2018, where Chahal picked up 16 wickets, finishing just behind Kuldeep with 17, as India decimated the Proteas 5-1. Chahal was then picked for the 2019 ODI World Cup in 2019, where he picked up 12 wickets. In a T20I against Australia in 2021, Chahal became the first concussion substitute to win player of the match, coming in to replace Ravindra Jadeja. He was also part of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, which lifted the trophy in the Americas.
Chahal is also the leading wicket-taker in the history of the IPL with 233 scalps. He has also represented the Rajasthan Royals and the Punjab Kings after not being retained by RCB ahead of the 2022 season. With the Royals, he won the purple cap in the 2022 season with 27 wickets. He picked up figures of 5 for 40 that season against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which included a hat-trick, and are still his best IPL figures. In 2025, against the same team, he picked up figures of 4 for 28 in a Player of the Match performance, which helped the Kings defend a total of 111, the lowest total ever defended in the history of the IPL.
