George Dockrell made his debut for Ireland aged just 17, as one of the youngest debutants in cricket and in the following 16 years has established himself as a key player in their side. Starting out as a left-arm spinner, Dockrell worked on his batting to become one of Ireland’s most reliable all-rounders. He has picked up 111 wickets in 133 ODI matches, averaging 35.89 and at an economy of 4.90, and has picked up 91 wickets in 159 T20I matches.
Making his debut for Ireland in the 2010 T20 World Cup Qualifiers, Dockrell was one of the breakout players for Ireland as they won the qualifiers to make the main tournament. He made his World Cup debut against the West Indies, as the youngest player in the tournament, picking up figures of 3 for 16 and then troubled Kevin Pietersen in their abandoned match against England, conceding just 19 runs in four overs despite going wicketless.
He was back in the headlines after dismissing Sachin Tendulkar in Ireland’s 2011 ODI World Cup match against India in Bengaluru. The batting legend was trapped in front to an arm ball after getting on his knees to sweep it away, with Dockrell calling the wicket ‘a dream come true ’. He picked up seven wickets in six matches in the tournament, averaging 29.57 with best figures of 2 for 23 against co-hosts Bangladesh in Mirpur. He finished with figures of 1 for 68 in Ireland’s historic victory against England at the tournament.
Dockrell has also represented the Ireland Under-19s since 2009, playing the 2010 Qualifier before making his youth ODI debut against South Africa in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. He was also named captain of the side in 2012, leading the Irish team in Australia, and was named ICC’s Associate Cricketer of the Year. He was the pick of the bowlers in Ireland’s historic victory over the West Indies in the 2015 ODI World Cup in Nelson, with figures of 3 for 50 in ten overs as the Irish team chased down a total of 305. Dockrell also took the catches to dismiss centurion Lendl Simmons and Darren Sammy, who was batting on 89.
Dockrell was part of the 19-member contingent which received their first-ever bunch of Central Contracts from Cricket Ireland in 2019, and then was part of the contingent in 2020 which was given full-time professional contracts from their board.
Dockrell made his Test debut for Ireland in 2019 in a match against Afghanistan held in India due to security concerns in the country. He has also been part of Ireland’s squads for the 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cups, having established himself as a key bowler in their attack.
Dockrell started his career batting at number 10 and 11, but developed into a reliable batter, with his highest batting position being at number five. He has scored eight half-centuries for Ireland, and has two List A centuries for the Nothern Knights, with the first one coming in 2021.
