Anya Shrubsole got England off to a flying start with the wicket of Smriti Mandhana in the second over of the game. Skipper Mithali Raj and Punam Raut set up a partnership for the second wicket before Raj was run out in a mix-up. Raut was joined by semi-final hero Harmanpreet Kaur, as the pair stitched a stand of 95 runs before Harmanpreet fell to left-arm spinner Alex Hartley. Veda Krishnaurthy joined Raut as the pair began stabilising her innings before Raut was adjudged LBW to Shrubsole, but was unable to review it after the timer had passed. Raut kept India’s hopes alive with a well-made 86 off 115 balls, taking India to 191 before a collapse began.
Hartley dismissed Sushma Verma for a duck before Shrubsole removed Krishnamurthy and Deepti Sharma to complete her five-wicket haul. With just one wicket needed, and India needing 10 runs, Gunn dropped a catch of Yadav off Shrubsole’s bowling, sending the English players into a frenzy. Shrubsole then gestured to her teammates to relax, before clearing up Gaykwad with the next ball to seal a nine-run victory and finish with figures of 6 for 46. She sniffed the opening and cleared up the Indian innings with a fine spell in the death overs and led her team to a famous victory at the ‘Home of Cricket’, a historic moment in women’s sport. India lost their last seven wickets for 28 runs in a dramatic collapse. Beaumont was adjudged Player of the Tournament for scoring 410 runs in nine matches at an average of 45.55, finishing a solitary run above India’s skipper.
