On this day in 2018, Aaron Finch produced one of the greatest batting performances in T20I history, smashing a record-breaking 172 against Zimbabwe national cricket team in the Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series.
Leading Australia in the third match of the tournament, Finch powered his side to a mammoth 229/2 in 20 overs with a breathtaking display of clean hitting. The right-handed opener hammered 16 fours and 10 sixes during his 76-ball stay at the crease, striking at an incredible rate of 226.31. His 172 remains the highest individual score in T20 International cricket and was, at the time, the second-highest score in all T20 cricket, trailing only Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 in the 2013 IPL by just three runs.
Interestingly, Finch had already held the previous T20I record with his blistering 156 against England in 2013. His 172 made him the only batter to register two 150-plus scores in T20I cricket, a feat unmatched by any other player. His 16 boundaries in the innings also set a new T20I record.
Finch and opening partner Darcy Short put together a stunning 223-run opening stand off just 116 deliveries, completely dominating the Zimbabwean bowling attack. Blessing Muzarabani was the only bowler to enjoy any success, finishing with figures of 2/38.
Chasing a daunting target of 230, Zimbabwe never looked in contention and were restricted to 129/9 in their 20 overs. Solomon Mire top-scored with 28, while Australia’s bowlers ensured a comfortable victory. Andrew Tye starred with the ball, claiming 3/12, while Ashton Agar chipped in with economical figures of 2/16.
Finch’s unforgettable knock continues to stand as the highest individual score in T20I history and remains one of the most destructive batting displays ever witnessed in international cricket.
