On this day in 2019, Australia produced one of their most complete performances of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, defeating an unbeaten New Zealand side by 86 runs at Lord’s. The convincing victory secured Australia’s place in the semifinals and reinforced their credentials as one of the tournament favourites. Against a team that had impressed throughout the competition, Australia showcased their depth with significant contributions from players beyond their biggest stars.
Much of the build-up to Australia’s World Cup campaign had centred on the return of Steven Smith and David Warner following their year-long suspensions. Both had settled seamlessly back into the side and contributed heavily during the tournament. However, against New Zealand, Australia demonstrated that they were far from a two-man batting unit. After an early setback, Usman Khawaja steadied the innings with a composed 88, while wicketkeeper Alex Carey produced one of the finest knocks of his career with a fluent 71.
The pair added a crucial partnership that rescued Australia from a difficult position and laid the platform for a competitive total. Their measured approach against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack ensured Australia recovered after early wickets. Late contributions from the lower order helped lift the total to 243, a score that appeared competitive rather than commanding on a surface offering assistance to both seamers and batters willing to apply themselves.
If Australia’s batting was disciplined, their bowling was devastating. Mitchell Starc once again proved why he was the premier fast bowler of the tournament, producing a spell that dismantled New Zealand’s chase. Bowling with pace, swing and relentless accuracy, Starc removed key batters at regular intervals and denied New Zealand any opportunity to build lasting partnerships. He finished with outstanding figures of 5 for 26, his third five-wicket haul in Cricket World Cup history, extending a remarkable record on the sport’s biggest stage.
New Zealand never recovered from Starc’s early breakthroughs. Kane Williamson fought with a determined half-century, but wickets continued to fall around him as Australia’s attack maintained constant pressure. Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff and Marcus Stoinis provided excellent support, ensuring the required run rate steadily climbed beyond reach. Eventually, New Zealand were dismissed for 157, suffering their first defeat of the tournament after an unbeaten start.
The victory highlighted the balance within Australia’s squad. Their middle order delivered when the established stars were unable to dominate, while the bowling attack once again showed its ability to defend a total under pressure. Starc’s brilliance with the new ball and at the death became one of the defining features of Australia’s World Cup campaign, and his performances throughout the tournament would eventually earn him the record for the most wickets in a single men’s Cricket World Cup.
Looking back, the win at Lord’s marked the moment Australia shifted into championship mode. Beating an unbeaten New Zealand side with such authority sent a strong message to the rest of the field ahead of the knockout stages. Although Australia would eventually fall to England in the semifinals, this performance remains one of their finest displays of the 2019 World Cup, combining resilience with the ruthless execution that has long been associated with five-time world champions.
