On this day in 2025, Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally achieved what generations of their supporters had waited nearly two decades to witness. After years of coming close, enduring heartbreak and carrying the weight of expectation, the franchise secured its maiden Indian Premier League title with a six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The triumph ended one of the most discussed title droughts in franchise cricket and completed a journey that began with the league’s inaugural season in 2008.
The victory carried significance beyond the result itself. Royal Challengers Bengaluru had previously reached the IPL final in 2009, 2011 and 2016 without lifting the trophy. Several outstanding players had represented the franchise over the years, yet the title remained elusive. That long wait made the achievement especially meaningful for a fan base that had remained loyal through periods of success, disappointment and constant scrutiny.
Batting first after Punjab Kings elected to field, Bengaluru posted 190 for 9 in their 20 overs. The innings was built around contributions from multiple batters rather than a single dominant performance. Virat Kohli top-scored with 43 from 35 deliveries, anchoring the innings during a phase when wickets fell at regular intervals. While Punjab prevented Bengaluru from completely taking control, the total ensured that the chase would require sustained aggression throughout the innings.
Punjab’s response remained competitive for much of the contest. Their batting line-up continued to find boundaries and stayed within touching distance of the target deep into the chase. However, Bengaluru’s bowlers consistently produced crucial breakthroughs whenever momentum threatened to shift. The ability to strike at important moments prevented Punjab from establishing the partnerships required to gain complete control of the run chase.
Among the decisive performances came from Krunal Pandya, whose spell of 2 for 17 earned him the Player of the Match award. On a night when every run mattered, his control and discipline significantly slowed Punjab’s progress. Bengaluru also received valuable contributions from their pace attack, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar claiming two wickets and helping maintain pressure during the closing stages of the innings. As the required rate climbed, Punjab found themselves needing increasingly difficult combinations of boundaries to stay alive in the contest.
Even then, the match was not settled until the final overs. Shashank Singh fought until the end with an unbeaten 61, giving Punjab a realistic chance of an extraordinary finish. Yet Bengaluru held their nerve under immense pressure and successfully defended their total. When the final ball was completed, years of frustration gave way to celebration as players and supporters embraced a moment many feared might never arrive.
The 2025 title remains one of the most significant milestones in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s history. It was not merely a championship victory but the culmination of persistence across eighteen seasons. For a franchise often defined by near misses, June 3, 2025 became the date that permanently altered its story. On this day, Royal Challengers Bengaluru were no longer contenders searching for validation. They were IPL champions.
