The inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026 is set to begin with a mouth-watering clash between Amsterdam Flames and Rotterdam Dockers at Sportpark Westvliet in The Hague on August 26. The Dutch derby will see two ambitious franchises begin their campaigns with star-studded squads and plenty of international experience.
Amsterdam Flames have assembled an impressive combination of established international stars and leading European Associate players. Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, while the squad features the likes of Steve Smith, Tim David, Michael Bracewell and Scott Edwards. The franchise also has a strong Dutch and European core comprising Bas de Leede, Tim Pringle, Aryan Dutt, Kyle Klein, Curtis Campher and Max O’Dowd.
The ETPL’s playing conditions make team selection particularly interesting. Each XI must feature seven locally affiliated players and a maximum of four overseas players, meaning the Flames will have to leave some notable names out despite possessing considerable depth.
With that in mind, here is the
predicted playing XI of Amsterdam Flames for Match 1 against Rotterdam Dockers.
Ajinkya Rahane is expected to be the opening batter for the Amsterdam-based franchise.
Rahane is set to play his first professional cricket match after announcing his retirement from international and Indian domestic cricket.
The veteran batter has truckloads of experience playing franchise and T20 cricket and has been a legend in the Indian Premier League with over 5000 runs. The Ashwi-KD-born will look to provide an attacking start.
Mitchell Marsh should partner Rahane at the top and lead the Flames in their opening game.
The Australian all-rounder has been named captain of Amsterdam and provides the side with two-way value. His ability to clear the boundary makes him a dangerous T20 opener, while his medium-fast bowling gives the team another option.
Marsh’s leadership will also be important as the Flames navigate their first-ever ETPL fixture.
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards is likely to occupy the No. 3 position while also taking responsibility behind the stumps.
Edwards has extensive experience of playing international cricket in Dutch conditions and should provide stability between the explosive overseas players and the rest of the batting order.
His wicketkeeping skills will also be particularly important against a Rotterdam side featuring dangerous batters such as Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen.
Tim David is expected to provide the Flames with their primary middle-order power.
The Singapore-born Australian batter has established himself as one of the most destructive finishers in T20 cricket. His ability to attack spin and pace makes him an ideal option for the latter stages of an innings.
If Smith and Marsh provide a platform, David could be unleashed in the final six or seven overs.
New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell could occupy the No. 5 position.
Bracewell gives Amsterdam an important combination of batting depth and off-spin. He can accelerate against both pace and spin and is capable of bowling useful overs if Marsh needs additional options.
His versatility could prove particularly valuable in the opening game, when the team is still assessing how the conditions behave.
Bas de Leede is likely to be one of the key local players in the Flames’ XI.
The Netherlands all-rounder has already established himself as an important player for the national team. He offers useful contributions with both bat and ball and can adapt his role according to the match situation.
His inclusion also provides Amsterdam with valuable balance under the ETPL’s local-player regulations.
Curtis Campher could be another important all-round option for Mitchell Marsh.
The Ireland international was selected first overall in the ETPL player draft, underlining how highly the franchise rates his abilities.
Campher can bat in the middle order and provide seam bowling, making him particularly useful in a T20 side that needs multiple players capable of contributing in different phases.
His experience of Associate cricket should also complement Amsterdam’s Dutch contingent.
Tim Pringle is expected to provide the team’s specialist spin option.
The Netherlands all-rounder was Amsterdam’s third-round draft selection and can contribute with left-arm spin while also providing useful lower-order batting.
Against a Rotterdam batting line-up featuring several aggressive players, Pringle’s ability to slow the scoring rate through the middle overs could be crucial.
Aryan Dutt should be another spin option for the Flames.
The Dutch all-rounder was selected in the fourth round of the draft and brings further variation to Amsterdam’s bowling attack.
Dutt’s off-spin could be particularly useful against Rotterdam’s left-handers, while his batting gives the side additional depth.
Kyle Klein is likely to lead the Dutch pace contingent.
The Netherlands seamer was Amsterdam’s second-round draft pick and will be expected to provide wickets during the powerplay and middle overs.
His ability to complement the international quality of the Flames’ attack could be crucial against Rotterdam’s powerful top order.
Max O’Dowd could complete the Amsterdam XI as their seventh locally affiliated player.
The experienced Netherlands batter was selected in the sixth round and provides additional top-order depth. Although he may bat lower than his usual position depending on the combination, his experience makes him a valuable option.
His inclusion would also allow Amsterdam to satisfy the local-player requirement while maintaining considerable strength in the overseas department.
