Namibia will face Zimbabwe in Match 5 of the T20I Tri-Series 2026 at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Thursday, September 3. The encounter will be the second meeting between the two sides in the tournament, with Namibia looking to bounce back after a narrow five-run defeat against Zimbabwe in Match 3.
The hosts began their campaign impressively, defeating South Africa by 18 runs in the opening game. However, their 190-run effort against Zimbabwe on August 31 was not enough, as Zimbabwe chased down the target with five wickets to spare.
Namibia will therefore be keen to make the necessary adjustments before their second clash against Sikandar Raza’s side. With Gerhard Erasmus leading a squad featuring experienced campaigners such as JJ Smit, Jan Frylinck, Bernard Scholtz and Ruben Trumpelmann, the hosts have enough quality to challenge Zimbabwe.
Here is the predicted playing XI of Namibia for Match 5 of T20I Tri-series against Zimbabwe:
Michael van Lingen is expected to open the innings for Namibia.
The left-handed batter provides attacking intent at the top and can make full use of the field restrictions. His ability to find boundaries square of the wicket makes him an important Powerplay batter.
Against Zimbabwe’s pace attack, van Lingen will need to be aggressive without throwing his wicket away.
Louren Steenkamp should partner van Lingen at the top of the order.
Steenkamp has emerged as an important top-order option for Namibia and brings an attacking approach to the Powerplay. His ability to rotate the strike and accelerate when opportunities arise makes him a useful partner for van Lingen.
The opening pair will be expected to give Namibia a stronger start than they managed in the previous encounter.
Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton is likely to come in at No. 3.
The dynamic left-hander can change the momentum of an innings rapidly and is capable of attacking spin as well as pace. Loftie-Eaton’s ability to score quickly makes him particularly valuable if Namibia lose an early wicket.
He could also be required to accelerate the innings during the middle overs.
Captain Gerhard Erasmus should continue at No. 4.
Erasmus is the backbone of Namibia’s batting lineup and one of their most experienced players. He also provides useful off-spin, giving Namibia another bowling option.
The captain’s ability to read conditions at Windhoek will be crucial. Against Zimbabwe, he could be tasked with anchoring the innings while allowing the more aggressive batters around him to attack.
Jan Frylinck is expected to occupy the No. 5 position.
The experienced all-rounder offers Namibia valuable batting depth and can contribute with the ball. His ability to adapt according to the match situation makes him an important player in the middle order.
If Namibia lose quick wickets, Frylinck can stabilise the innings. If they have a strong start, he can switch gears and attack the death overs.
Zane Green could take the wicketkeeping gloves and bat at No. 6.
Green provides Namibia with another left-handed batting option and is capable of playing the finishing role. His presence also gives Erasmus flexibility when constructing the batting order.
Against Zimbabwe’s spinners, Green’s ability to rotate the strike could prove important.
JJ Smit should feature at No. 7.
The experienced all-rounder is one of Namibia’s most dependable lower-order players. His left-arm seam bowling gives the team another option, while his ability to clear the boundary makes him dangerous in the final overs.
Smit’s experience in pressure situations could be particularly valuable against Zimbabwe.
Jack Brassell is likely to retain his place in the bowling unit.
The left-arm seamer provides variety to Namibia’s attack and can be used with the new ball or during the middle overs. His ability to generate movement could be useful against Zimbabwe’s right-handed batters.
Brassell will need to maintain his lines against an aggressive Zimbabwean batting unit.
Bernard Scholtz should be one of Namibia’s key spin options.
The experienced left-arm orthodox spinner has played an important role for Namibia over the years. His accuracy and ability to bowl economical spells make him particularly valuable during the middle overs.
With Zimbabwe possessing several aggressive batters, Scholtz could be used to apply pressure and force mistakes.
Ruben Trumpelmann is expected to lead the pace attack.
The left-arm quick brings genuine pace and bounce and is capable of making early breakthroughs. His angle across right-handed batters could be particularly effective against Zimbabwe’s top order.
Trumpelmann’s death bowling will also be important, especially after Zimbabwe successfully chased 191 in the previous meeting.
Max Heingo could complete the XI.
The youngster provides Namibia with another seam-bowling option and adds depth to the attack. Heingo has been part of Namibia’s wider squad and represents the team’s desire to give emerging players opportunities alongside established stars.
His role will be to complement Trumpelmann and Brassell while providing Erasmus with another pace option.
