Vida Kovai Kings have earned a second chance to reach the TNPL 2026 final and will face Trichy Grand Cholas in Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on August 26. The Kovai Kings progressed to the second qualifier after their Eliminator against IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans was abandoned without a result due to persistent rain. Having finished third in the league stage, Shahrukh Khan’s side advanced on the basis of their superior position in the standings.
The washout came after Kovai had finished the league phase with eight points and an impressive net run rate of +1.638. They will now have to overcome Trichy, who received a direct Qualifier 2 berth after their Qualifier 1 clash against Siechem Madurai Panthers was also washed out. The winner of this knockout clash will book a place in the TNPL 2026 final.
Kovai have plenty of momentum heading into the crucial encounter. Their last completed game was an emphatic 85-run DLS victory over Dindigul Dragons, with captain Shahrukh Khan smashing a sensational 59 off just 18 balls and Jhatavedh Subramanyan returning outstanding figures of 4/12.
With the team unlikely to make wholesale changes, here is the predicted playing XI of Vida Kovai Kings for Qualifier 2 against Trichy Grand Cholas.
S Radhakrishnan is expected to open the innings and provide the aggressive intent at the top.
The left-handed batter has been a useful contributor for Kovai throughout the campaign and has formed an effective opening combination with Suresh Lokeshwar. Against Dindigul, the pair put on 60 runs for the opening wicket in just seven overs.
Radhakrishnan’s ability to attack during the powerplay will be particularly important against a Trichy bowling attack led by K Easwaran and V Athisayaraj Davidson.
Suresh Lokeshwar should continue as the wicketkeeper-opener.
He has provided Kovai with stability at the top while also taking responsibility behind the stumps. Lokeshwar scored a useful 31 off 24 balls in the last completed match against Dindigul and was involved in the strong opening partnership with Radhakrishnan.
His experience will be crucial in a knockout fixture where Kovai cannot afford an early collapse.
Balasubramaniam Sachin has arguably been Kovai’s most consistent batter in TNPL 2026 and should occupy the No. 3 position.
He finished the league stage as the team’s leading run-scorer with 377 runs, underlining his importance to the batting unit.
Sachin also played a match-winning knock of 77 off 45 balls against Trichy earlier in the tournament, helping Kovai post 201/6 in a massive 116-run victory.
His ability to build an innings while maintaining an aggressive scoring rate makes him one of Trichy’s biggest threats.
Andre Siddarth is likely to retain his place in the middle order.
The young batter was promoted to No. 4 against Dindigul, although he could manage only seven runs from nine deliveries.
Despite that modest outing, his ability to accelerate through the middle overs gives Kovai another attacking option. Against Trichy, he could be particularly useful if the openers provide a solid foundation.
Captain Shahrukh Khan will be the key player in Kovai’s batting line-up.
The experienced finisher produced one of the innings of the TNPL 2026 season in Kovai’s previous completed game, smashing 59 off just 18 balls, including four fours and six sixes. His strike rate of 327.78 demonstrated his extraordinary power-hitting ability.
Shahrukh has also shown that he can change matches within a few overs. With a place in the final at stake, Kovai will once again look towards their captain to provide the late-innings acceleration.
K Deeban Lingesh should continue as the team’s bowling all-rounder.
Lingesh has been an important part of Kovai’s bowling combination and offers useful depth with the bat. He was also instrumental during the abandoned Eliminator against Tiruppur, bowling a testing spell before rain interrupted proceedings.
His ability to contribute in both departments provides Shahrukh with another tactical option.
RS Ambrish is expected to retain his place as a bowling all-rounder.
He can provide valuable overs in the middle phase while also adding depth to the batting order. In Kovai’s previous meeting with Trichy, Ambrish returned excellent figures of 3/22, playing a key role in bowling the Grand Cholas out for just 85.
His knowledge of Trichy’s batting unit could once again prove useful.
G Kishoor should feature as another all-round option.
Kishoor gives the Kovai Kings flexibility and can be used according to the match situation. His presence allows Shahrukh to manage his bowling resources without putting excessive pressure on the frontline attack.
In a knockout game, such flexibility can become particularly valuable.
Manimaran Siddharth is likely to lead the spin attack alongside Jhatavedh Subramanyan.
The spinner has already demonstrated his effectiveness in Chennai and was part of Kovai’s XI during their dominant victory over Dindigul. He also bowled economically during the rain-hit Eliminator against Tiruppur.
With the Chepauk surface potentially assisting slower bowlers, Siddharth could have an important role in the middle overs.
Jhatavedh Subramanyan is one of the most important players in this predicted XI.
The spinner finished the league stage with 13 wickets, making him Kovai’s leading wicket-taker.
He was at his best against Dindigul, claiming 4/12 from three overs and effectively dismantling their chase.
Trichy have several experienced batters, but Subramanyan’s variations could make life difficult for them during the middle overs.
The final bowling spot could depend on conditions and team balance. Kovai have recently used M Siddharth as their specialist spinner, while Deeban Lingesh has also been an important bowling option. Against Trichy, the management could prefer M Siddharth if the pitch offers substantial assistance to spin.
However, considering the combination used in their most recent completed match, M Siddharth is the likelier specialist bowler to complete the XI.
S Radhakrishnan, Suresh Lokeshwar (wk), Balasubramaniam Sachin, Andre Siddarth, Shahrukh Khan (c), K Deeban Lingesh, RS Ambrish, G Kishoor, M Siddharth, Jhatavedh Subramanyan, Manimaran Siddharth
