One of the most exciting contests could be between Namibia’s young batter Junior Taanyanda and South Africa’s express pacer Kwena Maphaka.
Taanyanda has quickly emerged as one of Namibia’s most promising young players. The 21-year-old made his T20I debut in June and was the leading run-scorer in Namibia’s previous tri-series. His ability to score quickly makes him an ideal candidate to attack the Powerplay.
However, South Africa will have a serious weapon with the new ball in Maphaka.
The teenage fast bowler has already gained international experience despite his young age and is regarded as one of the country’s brightest pace-bowling prospects. His raw speed and ability to extract bounce can make him difficult to attack, particularly early in an innings.
Taanyanda will therefore need to decide how aggressively he can take on Maphaka without exposing himself to unnecessary risk. The Namibian opener will want to maximise the fielding restrictions, whereas Maphaka’s objective will be to exploit any technical uncertainty and provide South Africa with an early breakthrough.
If Taanyanda survives the initial burst, Namibia could get the kind of Powerplay platform that allows their experienced middle order to take control. If Maphaka wins the battle, South Africa could immediately put pressure on the hosts.
The middle-overs battle between Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton and South Africa captain Bjorn Fortuin could be another fascinating matchup.
Loftie-Eaton is one of Namibia’s most dangerous T20 batters. The left-hander has the ability to accelerate rapidly and has become an important part of Namibia’s batting core alongside Erasmus, Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit. Namibia have deliberately retained this experienced group for the home tri-series.
Fortuin, meanwhile, will have two responsibilities in this contest. As South Africa’s captain, he will have to manage a young attack, while his left-arm spin could be an important weapon against Namibia’s middle order.
The key question will be whether Fortuin can prevent Loftie-Eaton from dictating the tempo.
Loftie-Eaton is unlikely to be satisfied with simply rotating the strike. If Namibia are well placed after the Powerplay, he could look to target the spinners and put pressure on South Africa’s captain.
Fortuin will need to vary his pace and angles while ensuring that Loftie-Eaton is not given too many deliveries in his preferred scoring zones.
This battle could become particularly important around overs 7-15. If Loftie-Eaton gets going, Namibia could finish with a substantial total. But if Fortuin removes the dangerous left-hander, South Africa could seize control of the middle overs.
The third battle could see Namibia’s experienced left-arm quick Ruben Trumpelmann take on South Africa’s explosive batter Dewald Brevis.
Brevis is one of the biggest attractions in South Africa’s young squad. The right-hander possesses enormous power and can change the complexion of a T20 innings within a few overs. With several established Proteas rested for this tour, Brevis has an excellent opportunity to take responsibility in the middle order.
Standing in his way is Trumpelmann, one of Namibia’s most experienced pace bowlers.
Trumpelmann has been a key member of Namibia’s international setup for several years and is particularly dangerous with the new ball. His left-arm angle can create problems for right-handers, while his ability to vary his pace gives him options later in the innings.
The contest could therefore be decided by how Brevis handles the bowler’s changes of angle and pace.
Brevis will want to attack whenever Trumpelmann misses his length, particularly if South Africa need acceleration in the middle overs. Trumpelmann, however, will know that bowling predictable deliveries to a batter of Brevis’ power could prove costly.
A wicket here could be worth considerably more than simply removing one batter. Brevis is capable of taking the game away from Namibia, while Trumpelmann’s dismissal of him could provide the hosts with a huge momentum boost.
