South Africa and Namibia are set to renew their rivalry in the opening match of the T20I tri-series at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Friday, August 28. Zimbabwe are the third team involved in the competition, with each side scheduled to play the others twice before the final. 

The Proteas entered the contest with a relatively inexperienced squad, with Bjorn Fortuin named captain and several young players handed opportunities. The squad includes Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann and Lhuan-dré Pretorius, among others. 

Namibia, meanwhile, will be led by experienced all-rounder Gerhard Erasmus. The hosts have retained a strong core featuring Zane Green, Michael van Lingen, Jan-Nicol Loftie-Eaton, Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit.

Here are the top three batters to watch out for in the 1st T20I between South Africa and Namibia:

1. Dewald Brevis – South Africa

Dewald Brevis is arguably the most explosive batter in South Africa’s squad and will be one of the biggest attractions in Windhoek.

The right-hander has already established himself as one of the country’s most exciting young white-ball batters. His ability to attack from the outset, particularly against spin, makes him an ideal player for T20 cricket.

Brevis enjoyed several eye-catching performances during the 2026 T20 World Cup. He scored 45 off 29 balls against India, 42 off just 18 deliveries against Zimbabwe and 34 from 27 balls against New Zealand. His 42 against Zimbabwe came at an extraordinary strike rate of 233.33 and included four sixes. 

He also produced several useful knocks during IPL 2026, including 44 off 27 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad and 41 off 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders. 

Those performances underline the kind of impact Brevis can have in the middle order.

Against Namibia, he could be particularly dangerous if he gets an opportunity to bat during the middle overs. The hosts possess experienced spinners, but Brevis’ aggressive approach could force Gerhard Erasmus to rethink his bowling plans.

With the Proteas giving several youngsters an opportunity on this tour, Brevis has a chance to make a strong statement and establish himself as one of the team’s key T20 batters.

2. Lhuan-dré Pretorius – South Africa

Lhuan-dré Pretorius is another South African batter who could make a major impact in the opening encounter.

The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter is known for his fearless approach at the top of the order. At just 20, Pretorius has already accumulated considerable experience across franchise and international cricket. He was part of South Africa’s 2026 squad and is now included in the Proteas’ young group for the Namibia tour. 

His numbers in franchise T20 cricket demonstrate his ability to score quickly. During the 2026 Major League Cricket season, Pretorius accumulated 465 runs at a strike rate of 176.14, including 29 sixes. He also scored 190 runs in The Hundred at a strike rate of 163.79. 

His international T20 record is still developing, but there have already been glimpses of his potential. Pretorius scored 44 off 28 balls against West Indies in January 2026, striking at 157.14. 

If he opens the innings against Namibia, the youngster could immediately put pressure on the hosts’ new-ball attack.

The Windhoek surface could reward batters who are prepared to take risks during the powerplay. Pretorius’ ability to hit boundaries square of the wicket and down the ground makes him well suited to that role.

A strong performance could also strengthen his case for a more permanent place in South Africa’s T20I setup.

3. Gerhard Erasmus – Namibia

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus completes the list and will be the key batter for the hosts.

Erasmus brings immense experience to Namibia’s side and has been one of the country’s most dependable performers across formats. His inclusion becomes even more important given the relatively young South African squad.

The all-rounder enters the tri-series after an outstanding T20I run earlier this year. During Namibia’s June T20I tri-series, Erasmus scored 151 runs from just 75 balls, including scores of 49, 31 and 51. His overall strike rate during the tournament was an extraordinary 201.33. 

His 51 off 20 balls against Nigeria was particularly destructive, while he also smashed 49 off 20 and 31 off 15 in the same competition. 

Erasmus also contributed 201 runs during Namibia’s List A series against Vidarbha in July, demonstrating that his form has extended beyond T20 cricket. 

The Namibia captain will therefore be central to his team’s chances against South Africa.

He can play the role of an aggressor when required but is equally capable of controlling an innings. His experience of international cricket also means he understands how to handle pressure situations.

For Namibia to challenge a talented South African side, Erasmus will likely need to produce a substantial contribution with the bat.
