Kane Williamson has built a reputation as one of the finest Test batters of his generation. Williamson’s career-best Test score came against West Indies in the first Test at Hamilton in December 2020. Sent in to bat, New Zealand lost Will Young early, bringing Williamson to the crease with the innings still in its infancy. What followed was a masterclass in concentration and controlled aggression.
Williamson batted for 624 minutes and faced 412 deliveries, eventually scoring 251. He initially focused on eliminating risk against a disciplined West Indies pace attack before gradually increasing the tempo. Once he became established, he began finding boundaries with greater regularity and showed particular confidence against the spin of Roston Chase.
His innings formed the backbone of New Zealand’s imposing 519/7 declared. Williamson’s knock was complemented by useful contributions from Tom Latham, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and Kyle Jamieson, but the New Zealand captain was clearly the central figure. The hosts subsequently bowled West Indies out twice to secure an innings-and-134-run victory, with Williamson named Player of the Match.
The 251 surpassed Williamson’s previous Test best and remains his highest score in international cricket’s longest format.
Five years before his career-best score, Williamson produced another extraordinary double century against Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. New Zealand were under considerable pressure after conceding a 135-run first-innings lead, leaving the hosts needing a substantial batting effort simply to stay in the contest.
Williamson responded with one of the most important innings of his career. He spent more than 10 hours at the crease, facing 438 balls on his way to an unbeaten 242. Rather than chasing quick runs, he displayed tremendous patience and gradually wore down the Sri Lankan attack.
His monumental effort became even more significant because of his partnership with wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling. The pair added an unbeaten 365-run stand for the sixth wicket, then a Test-record partnership. Williamson’s double century helped New Zealand recover from a difficult position and eventually force a draw.
The innings demonstrated another side of Williamson’s batting. Unlike some of his more dominant double centuries, this was built almost entirely around endurance, concentration and the ability to bat for exceptionally long periods.
Williamson’s third-highest Test score arrived against Pakistan at Hagley Oval in January 2021, completing a remarkable sequence of run-scoring. After making 251 against West Indies and 129 in the first Test against Pakistan, he produced another monumental effort in the second Test.
Williamson scored 238 from 364 balls, striking 28 fours during an innings that lasted more than nine and a half hours. Pakistan repeatedly searched for ways to dismiss him, but the New Zealand captain responded with a combination of precise defence and elegant stroke play.
His innings was central to New Zealand’s massive 659/6 declared, with Henry Nicholls adding 157 and Daryl Mitchell scoring his maiden Test century. Williamson also became only the third New Zealand batter, after Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor, to reach 7,000 Test runs during the innings. The hosts went on to win by an innings and 176 runs and complete a 2-0 series sweep.
Williamson’s three highest Test scores offer a fascinating insight into his batting philosophy. The 251 was a blend of patience and controlled aggression, the unbeaten 242 was an exercise in endurance, while the 238 showcased his ability to dominate while maintaining exceptional control.
