Vida Kovai Kings and Trichy Grand Cholas are set to face each other in Qualifier 2 of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on August 26. With a place in the final at stake, the pressure will be immense on both teams, and their bowling attacks could ultimately determine who gets one step closer to the title.
Kovai Kings will enter the contest with plenty of confidence after their emphatic 116-run victory over Trichy earlier in the season. Batting first, Kovai posted 201/6 before dismissing Trichy for just 85 in 16.1 overs. Jhatavedh Subramanyan and K Deeban Lingesh claimed three wickets apiece in a dominant bowling performance.
Trichy, however, have an opportunity to put that result behind them in the knockout fixture. Their bowling unit possesses experienced campaigners who can trouble Kovai’s strong batting line-up, particularly at the start of the innings.
Here are the top three bowlers to watch out for in Qualifier 2 of TNPL 2026.
Jhatavedh Subramanyan will be one of the biggest threats for Trichy Grand Cholas in the crucial knockout encounter.
The spinner has enjoyed an excellent TNPL 2026 campaign and has emerged as one of Kovai’s most dependable wicket-taking options. His ability to control the scoring rate while also producing breakthroughs makes him particularly valuable in the middle overs.
His previous performance against Trichy provides an obvious reason for the Grand Cholas to be concerned. Subramanyan returned outstanding figures of 3/10 in four overs when the teams met on August 15. He dismissed K Rajkumar, S Bhavan Suriya and Antony Dhas as Trichy collapsed to 85 all out.
The most impressive aspect of his spell was his economy. Subramanyan conceded only 10 runs in four overs, giving the Trichy batters virtually no opportunity to build momentum.
He will again be expected to operate through the middle overs, where Trichy have several players capable of rebuilding the innings after the powerplay. His variations in flight and pace could make it difficult for the batters to attack him consistently.
K Rajkumar, in particular, will have to find a way to counter Subramanyan after being dismissed by him in the previous meeting. Rajkumar was Trichy’s top scorer in that game with 32, but his dismissal triggered further damage.
If Subramanyan can once again strike during the middle overs, Kovai could gain a significant advantage.
For Trichy, K Easwaran is likely to be the most important bowler in their attack.
Easwaran has been one of the standout wicket-takers in TNPL 2026 and finished the league stage with 14 wickets, making him the leading wicket-taker among the players involved in this contest.
His ability to strike with the new ball will be particularly important against a Kovai top order that contains plenty of attacking intent.
Easwaran already demonstrated his effectiveness against Kovai in their previous meeting. He dismissed S Radhakrishnan and Suresh Lokeshwar during his three-over spell, although he conceded 41 runs as Kovai eventually reached 201/6.
The figures may not have been economical, but his two early wickets showed that he can create problems for Kovai’s openers.
That will be crucial in Qualifier 2. Kovai have a strong middle order featuring Balasubramaniam Sachin and captain Shahrukh Khan. If Easwaran can remove one or both openers early, Trichy will have a much better chance of preventing Kovai from building another imposing total.
His contest with Sachin could be particularly important. Sachin scored 77 off 45 balls in the previous meeting and was the key reason Kovai reached 201.
Easwaran will therefore be keen to avoid allowing the right-hander to settle. Getting Sachin early could completely alter the dynamics of the contest.
In a knockout game, Trichy will need their leading wicket-taker to produce his best spell.
K Deeban Lingesh completes the list and could once again prove to be a major match-winner for Kovai.
The all-rounder was sensational when the two teams met earlier this season, finishing with 3/24 in 3.1 overs. His wickets included J Suresh Kumar, Jagatheesan Kousik and Sai Shriram G.
Lingesh’s spell was particularly effective because he kept finding breakthroughs whenever Trichy threatened to establish a partnership.
His dismissal of Suresh Kumar for a duck was an early blow, while removing Jagatheesan Kousik soon after further exposed Trichy’s lower middle order. By the time Lingesh dismissed Sai Shriram, Trichy were already struggling at 76/9.
The all-rounder’s ability to bowl at different stages gives captain Shahrukh Khan considerable flexibility. He can be introduced when a partnership needs breaking or used alongside the frontline spinners to squeeze the opposition during the middle overs.
Lingesh could also be an important option if Trichy manage to negotiate Subramanyan successfully.
The Grand Cholas will be aware that they cannot afford another batting collapse. Their top order contains experienced players such as J Suresh Kumar, K Rajkumar and Jagatheesan Kousik, but all three struggled against Kovai in the previous encounter. Rajkumar’s 32 was the only substantial contribution among the top-order batters.
Lingesh’s ability to break partnerships could therefore again become a decisive factor.
