Hand-picked stories you can't miss

One-day international cricket has witnessed some extraordinary batting performances over the years, but few achievements are as remarkable as chasing down a huge target successfully. While totals of 350-plus were once considered extremely difficult to overhaul, modern ODI batting has transformed the way teams approach massive run chases.
The record for the highest successful run chase in men’s ODI cricket has stood since 2006, when South Africa produced an extraordinary comeback against Australia at Johannesburg. However, India’s stunning pursuit of 406 against West Indies in Guwahati on September 30, 2026, has now moved into second place on the all-time list. India reached 406/2 in just 43.3 overs, with Shubman Gill scoring an unbeaten 223.
Here are the top three highest successful run-chases in men’s ODI cricket.
Target: 372 | Winning score: 372/6
South Africa feature twice in the top three, having produced another remarkable run chase against Australia a decade after their Johannesburg classic.
In Durban in 2016, Australia posted 371/6, setting South Africa a daunting target of 372. The Proteas once again demonstrated their ability to chase enormous totals, reaching 372/6 with four wickets remaining. ICC lists the match as the third-highest successful chase in men’s ODI history.
David Miller played a crucial role in the chase, while other members of the South African batting lineup contributed to a collective effort. Unlike the 2006 encounter, which became a last-over thriller, South Africa completed the chase with a little more breathing room.
The victory also reinforced South Africa’s remarkable record when pursuing massive totals against Australia.
Target: 406 | Winning score: 406/2
India produced the second-highest successful chase in ODI history in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati.
West Indies posted a massive 405/7, their highest-ever total in men’s ODIs. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries as the visitors appeared to have placed India under enormous pressure.
India’s response, however, was spectacular.
Rohit Sharma launched the chase with a blistering 101 off 75 balls, while captain Shubman Gill produced a record-breaking unbeaten 223 off 133 balls. The pair added 255 runs for the opening wicket, giving India a remarkable platform in the pursuit.
Gill accelerated after reaching his hundred and eventually completed his double century from just 117 balls, setting a new record for the fastest double century in men’s ODI cricket. He also became the first batter to score more than 200 in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s previous mark of 201*.
India eventually reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs, winning by eight wickets with 39 balls remaining.
The result was India’s highest successful chase in ODI cricket and the second-highest overall. It also became only the second successful chase of a target above 400 in men’s ODIs.
Target: 435 | Winning score: 438/9
The highest successful run chase in ODI history remains South Africa’s incredible pursuit of 435 against Australia at the Wanderers in Johannesburg in 2006.
Australia had appeared to put the match beyond South Africa’s reach after scoring 434/4, at the time the highest team total ever recorded in ODI cricket. Ricky Ponting led the charge with a sensational 164 off 105 balls, while Mike Hussey contributed 81 off 51 deliveries.
South Africa’s response was equally extraordinary. Herschelle Gibbs smashed 175 from 111 balls, while Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher also made important contributions. The hosts eventually reached 438/9 with one ball remaining, completing a three-wicket victory.
The match remains one of the most famous games in ODI history because both teams crossed the 400-run mark. The combined total of 872 runs also remains the highest aggregate in a men’s ODI.
South Africa’s achievement has stood at the top of the successful-chase charts for two decades
| Rank | Team | Score | Opposition | Venue | Year |
| 1 | South Africa | 438/9 | Australia | Johannesburg | 2006 |
| 2 | India | 406/2 | West Indies | Guwahati | 2026 |
| 3 | South Africa | 372/6 | Australia | Durban | 2016 |
The list highlights how dramatically ODI batting has evolved. South Africa’s 438/9 from 2006 remains the benchmark, but India’s 406/2 in 2026 demonstrated that a 400-plus target is no longer automatically beyond reach when conditions, batting depth and execution align.
Interestingly, the next two places on the list also belong to South Africa and India. Before India’s Guwahati masterclass, South Africa’s 372/6 had occupied second place among successful ODI chases. ICC’s historical list also records England’s 371/3 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2019 and other 350-plus pursuits among the format’s biggest run chases.
The evolution of ODI cricket suggests that the 400-run barrier will continue to be challenged. With aggressive powerplay batting, deeper line-ups and increasingly innovative strokeplay, huge targets that once seemed virtually impossible can now become realistic chasing opportunities.
For now, though, South Africa’s 438/9 remains the highest successful run chase in ODI history, while India’s 406/2 against West Indies has become the second-highest after one of the most remarkable batting displays witnessed in the format.
