India and West Indies are set to renew their rivalry in the shortest format when they square off in the first T20I of the five-match series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6. The match will mark the beginning of a new chapter for both teams as they look to strengthen their combinations in the T20I format.
India enter the series with a strong squad led by Shreyas Iyer. The hosts have several explosive batters and versatile all-rounders, while the bowling department features the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi. Washington Sundar has been withdrawn from the series, with Naman Dhir named as his replacement.
Here are the top 3 Indian players to watch out for in 1st T20I against West Indies:
Abhishek Sharma could be one of the biggest match-winners for India in the series opener. The left-handed opener has established himself as an aggressive T20 batter who prefers to put pressure on the opposition from the first over.
His ability to attack during the powerplay makes him particularly valuable in India’s T20I setup. Abhishek can take on both pace and spin and has the range of strokes required to score quickly on different types of surfaces.
The Lucknow conditions could provide an interesting challenge. If the surface offers some assistance to the spinners, Abhishek will need to balance his attacking instincts with shot selection. West Indies have experienced options such as Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, who could be used early to counter India’s left-handed batter.
Abhishek’s contest against the West Indies spin attack could therefore set the tone for India’s innings. A quick start from him would allow the middle order to play with greater freedom.
With the Indian team looking to build a settled T20I combination, another impactful performance from Abhishek would further underline his importance at the top of the order.
Tilak Varma is another Indian player who could have a major role in the opening T20I. The left-hander has become an important component of India’s middle order and has also been named vice-captain for the series.
Unlike a batter whose role is limited to powerplay aggression, Tilak can adapt to different match situations. He can rotate the strike against spin, find boundaries when required and accelerate during the latter stages of the innings.
That versatility could be particularly important against West Indies. The visitors possess a varied bowling attack, with their spinners likely to play a significant role during the middle overs. Tilak’s ability to manipulate the field and attack spin could help India maintain momentum after the powerplay.
His leadership responsibilities also add another dimension to his role. As vice-captain, Tilak will be expected to contribute not only with the bat but also to support Shreyas Iyer in tactical decisions on the field.
India have several batting options in the squad, including Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, Tilak’s ability to bridge the gap between the top order and finishers makes him one of the most important players to watch.
Mayank Yadav could be the X-factor in India’s bowling attack during the first T20I.
The express pacer has returned to the Indian T20I setup after missing the previous T20I series against Afghanistan. His raw pace gives India an attacking option that can unsettle opposition batters even on surfaces that are not particularly helpful to fast bowlers.
West Indies have several powerful hitters in their squad, including Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford and Shimron Hetmyer. Mayank’s ability to generate high pace could make his spell particularly challenging for the Caribbean batters.
The key for Mayank will be accuracy. Bowling quickly is an obvious strength, but maintaining a consistent line and length will be crucial against an experienced T20 batting lineup. If he can combine his pace with discipline, he could provide India with crucial breakthroughs during the powerplay or middle overs.
The first T20I could also give the Indian team an opportunity to assess how best to use Mayank in the lead-up to future tournaments. With Arshdeep Singh providing left-arm pace and Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi offering spin, Mayank’s express pace adds variety to the attack.
