India will travel to New Zealand for a five-match T20I series later this month, with the first game scheduled to be played in Christchurch on October 22. The series will be an important assignment for the Indian team as it continues to build towards the next major T20I cycle.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has retained a largely unchanged squad from the ongoing home series against West Indies, with Shreyas Iyer continuing as captain and Tilak Varma named his deputy. Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the major addition after returning to the T20I setup following an impressive IPL 2026 campaign.
India have several exciting options in their batting lineup, but Shreyas Iyer, Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could be particularly important during the five-match series.
Shreyas Iyer will enter the New Zealand series with considerable confidence after producing a sensational performance in the opening T20I against West Indies.
The Indian captain smashed an unbeaten 102 off just 43 balls in Lucknow, including 10 fours and six sixes, to guide India to an eight-wicket victory. He also shared an unbeaten 137-run partnership with Ishan Kishan.
Iyer’s role in India’s T20I setup has become increasingly important. He provides experience in the middle order while also possessing the ability to shift gears rapidly once he gets settled.
His battle against New Zealand’s pace attack will be particularly interesting. The conditions in Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton can offer assistance to seamers, especially early in the innings. Iyer’s ability to play both pace and spin effectively could therefore be crucial.
As captain, he will also have the responsibility of setting the tone for a relatively young Indian batting unit. If he can carry his West Indies form into New Zealand, India will have a strong leader around whom the rest of the batting order can flourish.
Abhishek Sharma is another player who could make a major impact during the series.
The left-handed opener has established himself as one of India’s most dangerous T20 batters. His aggressive approach allows India to attack from the first over, putting opposition bowlers under immediate pressure.
Abhishek’s ability to clear the boundary against both pace and spin makes him particularly valuable in overseas conditions. New Zealand’s fast bowlers are likely to test him with movement and bounce, but his natural attacking game can also put them under pressure if he gets his timing right.
The youngster has already been part of India’s recent T20I plans and is included in the 16-member squad for the New Zealand tour.
Another advantage is his ability to contribute with the ball. His left-arm spin gives the captain an additional bowling option, allowing India greater flexibility when constructing the playing XI.
With Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also competing for top-order opportunities, Abhishek will need to continue producing impactful performances. However, his proven ability to score rapidly makes him one of India’s biggest weapons in the series.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could be the most exciting player to watch during India’s tour of New Zealand.
The teenage left-hander has already made a remarkable impression in international cricket. According to Rajasthan Royals, he has scored 246 runs in eight T20Is and has already produced multiple impactful performances for India.
Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach is one of his biggest strengths. He does not appear afraid to take on experienced bowlers, making him a potentially dangerous powerplay batter.
His performances in the T20I series against Zimbabwe further highlighted his talent. He scored two half-centuries in the three-match series, including a 50 off just 19 balls in the opening match and an 81 off 49 in the final game.
New Zealand will present a different challenge, however. The youngster will have to deal with unfamiliar conditions and high-quality seam bowling. The movement available in Christchurch and Wellington could test his technique, particularly during the early overs.
At the same time, those conditions could provide an opportunity for Sooryavanshi to demonstrate that his aggressive style can succeed outside the subcontinent.
| Rank | Player | Role | Key strength |
| 1 | Shreyas Iyer | Batter/Captain | Middle-order control and power |
| 2 | Abhishek Sharma | Opener/All-rounder | Explosive powerplay batting |
| 3 | Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | Opener | Fearless strokeplay |
