Pakistan will take on England in the fourth ODI of the tri-series at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, October 25. With Pakistan aiming to strengthen their position in the race for the final and England desperate to revive their campaign, the contest promises to be an important test for both sides.
Pakistan have looked dangerous with their pace attack and middle-order batting, while England possess an aggressive batting lineup capable of producing match-changing performances. The visitors will need to improve their bowling discipline after struggling to contain opposition batters in the earlier matches. Meanwhile, Pakistan will look to exploit their home advantage and put England under pressure.
Several individual contests could determine the outcome of the encounter. From the battle between Shaheen Shah Afridi and Joe Root to the middle-order contest involving Babar Azam and Adil Rashid, both teams have players capable of shifting momentum in their favour.
Here are the top three player battles to watch out for in the fourth ODI between Pakistan and England.
One of the most exciting contests could be between Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and England skipper Harry Brook. The two leaders will have important roles to play, with Shaheen looking to exploit any early movement and Brook aiming to establish himself at the crease.
Brook has already demonstrated his ability to dominate bowling attacks in the tournament. His remarkable 202-run innings against Sri Lanka highlighted his power, timing and capacity to accelerate against different types of bowling. England will need another influential contribution from their captain if they are to challenge Pakistan.
Shaheen, however, will offer a stern examination with the new ball. His left-arm angle can create problems for right-handed batters, while his ability to move the ball and deliver yorkers makes him dangerous throughout the innings.
The key for Shaheen will be to prevent Brook from settling into his preferred attacking rhythm. Bowling at the stumps and mixing fuller deliveries with hard lengths could restrict Brook’s scoring options.
Brook, meanwhile, will look to capitalise on anything pitched too short or too wide. If he survives the initial spell, he could put pressure on Shaheen by attacking the field and forcing Pakistan to alter their plans.
Why this battle matters: If Shaheen dismisses Brook early, England could lose their most dangerous batter. If Brook wins the contest, England could build the momentum needed for a match-winning total.
The second key battle will feature Pakistan’s experienced batter Babar Azam against England’s leg-spinner Adil Rashid. This contest could shape Pakistan’s innings, particularly during the middle overs when England will look to slow down the scoring rate.
Babar’s ability to build an innings makes him a crucial figure in Pakistan’s batting order. He can rotate the strike, find gaps and punish loose deliveries without taking unnecessary risks. If he bats deep into the innings, Pakistan will have a stronger platform for a late acceleration.
Rashid brings considerable experience and a varied leg-spin repertoire. His changes of pace, flight and turn can make it difficult for batters to predict the trajectory of the ball. Against a player who values timing and placement, Rashid could attempt to draw Babar forward and induce a mistake.
For Babar, the challenge will be to avoid becoming stuck against spin. Rotating the strike and selecting the right opportunities to attack will be essential. He may also target deliveries that allow him to use his strong sweep and conventional strokeplay.
Rashid’s role will be to prevent Babar from controlling the tempo. If England can remove the Pakistan batter during the middle overs, they could expose the hosts’ lower middle order and restrict their final total.
Why this battle matters: Babar’s ability to anchor the innings and Rashid’s wicket-taking threat make this a potentially decisive contest. Whoever controls the middle overs could give their team a significant advantage.
Arafat Minhas against Tom Banton is another matchup that could influence the result, especially if England find themselves rebuilding after losing early wickets.
Minhas emerged as a match-winner in the previous meeting between the sides, claiming six wickets for 40 runs as England were bowled out for 215. His left-arm spin proved highly effective, making him one of Pakistan’s most important bowling options heading into the Lahore encounter.
Banton, meanwhile, is capable of changing the momentum with his attacking approach. The England wicketkeeper-batter scored 57 in the previous match against Pakistan, showing that he can contribute even when the innings becomes difficult.
The upcoming contest will require Minhas to maintain his accuracy and vary his pace without offering Banton opportunities to attack. Bowling into the stumps and using changes in flight could encourage the batter to take risks.
Banton will need to assess the conditions carefully. Rather than attack every delivery, he could look to rotate the strike before targeting balls that allow him to play through the off side or use his power against the spin.
The Lahore surface may offer assistance to spinners as the innings progresses, making this battle particularly important if England are attempting to accelerate during the middle overs.
Why this battle matters: Minhas has already demonstrated his ability to trouble England, while Banton has shown that he can score against Pakistan. Another breakthrough from the spinner could derail England’s innings, but a productive Banton knock would improve the visitors’ chances considerably.
