England and Sri Lanka will lock horns in Match 6 of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2026 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on October 29. With both teams aiming to strengthen their position ahead of the final, the contest promises another exciting chapter in their rivalry.
Their previous encounter produced one of the most remarkable matches of the tournament. England piled up 429/4, powered by Harry Brook’s sensational 202 off 116 balls, but Sri Lanka pulled off a stunning two-wicket victory by chasing down the target with one ball remaining. Pavan Rathnayake scored 130, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both narrowly missed centuries.
Here are 3 player battles to watch out for:
England captain Harry Brook will be one of the biggest threats for Sri Lanka after his breathtaking double century in the previous meeting. His 202-run knock included 21 fours and 10 sixes, helping England post a formidable total. Brook demonstrated how quickly he can take control of an ODI innings once he gets settled.
Asitha Fernando could be one of the key bowlers tasked with containing the England skipper. The Sri Lankan pacer will need to maintain disciplined lines, mix his lengths and avoid allowing Brook to settle into a predictable rhythm. Bowling too full could give the batter opportunities to drive through the off side, while short deliveries could disappear if they lack pace or precision.
Sri Lanka may look to attack Brook early, before he gets the chance to dominate the middle overs. Changes in pace and well-directed deliveries around the stumps could be important weapons.
Brook, meanwhile, will aim to disrupt the bowler’s rhythm by rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. If he survives the initial spell, England could once again build a massive total around their captain.
Brook’s explosive scoring ability against Asitha’s challenge of finding early breakthroughs could shape England’s innings.
Pavan Rathnayake emerged as one of the heroes of Sri Lanka’s remarkable chase in the previous match. The middle-order batter struck 130 off 106 deliveries, including 15 fours and three sixes. His composure after Sri Lanka lost two early wickets proved crucial in keeping the chase alive.
England will need a clear plan to prevent Rathnayake from repeating that performance. Josh Tongue could play a significant role, using his pace and variations to challenge the batter’s timing. Tongue claimed three wickets in the previous encounter, although Rathnayake was dismissed by Sam Curran. That makes the broader England bowling attack’s approach particularly important.
Rathnayake’s strength lies in his ability to balance caution with aggression. Rather than forcing big shots immediately, he can rotate the strike, build partnerships and accelerate once the field spreads. England will therefore need to restrict easy singles and target the stumps when he attempts to increase the scoring rate.
Tongue will be looking to make the most of any movement or extra bounce available. If he can dismiss Rathnayake before the batter settles, England could prevent another damaging partnership.
Rathnayake’s confidence after his match-winning century will meet Tongue’s need to strike at crucial moments.
Dasun Shanaka nearly took Sri Lanka over the line single-handedly in their previous meeting. He smashed 97 off just 50 balls, hitting six fours and eight sixes, and transformed the chase with his aggressive approach. His 133-run partnership with Rathnayake off only 79 deliveries swung the contest firmly in Sri Lanka’s favour.
Liam Dawson could be an important option for England when Shanaka arrives at the crease. The left-arm spinner will need to vary his pace, use his angles and make it difficult for Shanaka to free his arms. A disciplined line could force the Sri Lankan all-rounder to take risks rather than access his preferred hitting zones.
Shanaka, however, is capable of changing a match in a matter of overs. His power against spin and ability to clear the boundary make him dangerous even when the required run rate climbs. England may need to protect the straight boundary and keep fielders in catching positions when the situation allows.
Dawson also has to be careful not to become too defensive. If he bowls too predictably, Shanaka could attack from the outset and put England under pressure.
What makes this battle interesting: Dawson’s control in the middle overs against Shanaka’s power-hitting could determine whether Sri Lanka finish strongly or England regain control.
