Watson’s unbeaten 185 against Bangladesh remains the highest individual ODI score by an Australian and is widely regarded as one of the greatest chases in the history of the format. Australia were pursuing a target of 230, and Watson effectively completed the chase on his own. Opening the batting, he unleashed an extraordinary assault that left the Bangladesh attack without answers and transformed a routine run chase into a record-breaking occasion.
His 185 not out came from only 96 deliveries and featured 15 fours and 15 sixes. Australia reached the target with 24 overs to spare, while Watson finished unbeaten at the crease. At the time, the innings set multiple records, including the highest score in a successful ODI chase and the highest individual ODI score by an Australian batter. More than a decade later, it remains the defining innings of his international career.
Only a few months after his Mirpur masterpiece, Watson produced another extraordinary ODI innings, this time against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia had lost early wickets and required someone to anchor the innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate. Watson responded with a knock that combined composure, authority and relentless boundary-hitting against a quality attack.
He remained unbeaten on 161, his second-highest ODI score, and carried Australia to a commanding total. The innings demonstrated the full range of his batting. It remains one of the finest ODI hundreds produced by an Australian opener and further cemented his status as one of the world’s leading white-ball batters in 2011.
Unlike the first two entries, this performance was not confined to a single match. Watson’s campaign at the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 was the complete exhibition of an elite all-rounder. Throughout the tournament, he dominated with both bat and ball, often carrying Australia in crucial moments. His contributions came against a variety of opponents and under different match situations, making the achievement particularly impressive.
Watson finished the tournament as its leading run-scorer with 249 runs while also taking 11 wickets, earning the Player of the Tournament award. He produced four consecutive Player-of-the-Match performances and was among the leading performers in every major statistical category. Although Australia did not win the tournament, Watson’s all-round excellence was unmatched.
