Bangladesh will look to bounce back when they take on Zimbabwe in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Friday, July 17. The visitors suffered a disappointing 32-run defeat in the opening game despite restricting Zimbabwe to 170/6.
The Bangla Tigers struggled with the bat as their top order failed to build partnerships. Yasir Ali’s fighting half-century was the lone bright spot, but the lack of support from the other batters meant Bangladesh were bowled out for 138 in 19 overs. With the series on the line, the visitors are expected to stick with the same combination but will hope for a much-improved performance from their batting unit.
Bangladesh are unlikely to make any changes to their top three despite the disappointing outing in the first T20I. Tanzid Hasan Tamim looked positive during his brief stay, scoring 16 off just eight balls, but failed to convert his start into a substantial innings. Saif Hassan also got into double digits but could not make an impact after scoring 12.
Parvez Hossain Emon endured a forgettable outing, departing for just five runs. The top order will have to negotiate Zimbabwe’s pace attack better, especially Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, who shared eight wickets between them in the previous match.
Skipper Towhid Hridoy managed only 14 off 13 deliveries. The captain will be keen to lead from the front in the must-win encounter after failing to anchor the innings in the series opener.
Yasir Ali was Bangladesh’s standout performer with the bat in the first T20I. Walking in after the early wickets, the right-hander played a fighting knock of 54 off 38 balls, striking two fours and three sixes. He kept Bangladesh in the contest before eventually running out of partners.
Nurul Hasan could not contribute much, getting run out for three, but the experienced wicketkeeper-batter remains an important figure in the middle order. He will look to provide stability if Bangladesh lose early wickets once again.
Mahedi Hasan chipped in with 19 runs and also contributed with the ball, although he went wicketless. His all-round abilities make him a vital player for Bangladesh, and the team will expect a bigger contribution from him in the second T20I.
Bangladesh’s bowling attack had its moments despite ending on the losing side. Nahid Rana was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with impressive figures of 4/26. The young pacer consistently troubled Zimbabwe’s batters with his pace and will once again be Bangladesh’s biggest wicket-taking threat.
Mohammad Saifuddin also bowled well, claiming two wickets, including those of Sikandar Raza and Dion Myers. However, Taskin Ahmed, usually Bangladesh’s pace spearhead, went wicketless despite bowling economically, while Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan were unable to make breakthroughs.
Bangladesh are expected to retain the same bowling attack, but they will need stronger support from their senior bowlers if they are to level the series.
