The opening match of the two-Test series between Bangladesh and Pakistan has reached a fever pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. In a classic battle of grit and spin, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has emerged as the protagonist for the hosts, claiming a pivotal five-wicket haul that has effectively handed Bangladesh a narrow but crucial lead in the first Test.
Despite a heroic effort from Pakistan’s debutant Azan Awais, who notched a magnificent century in his first international appearance, the disciplined bowling of the Bangladeshi spinners has tilted the scales in favor of the home side.
The narrative of the match centered on the duel between the batting resilience of the young Pakistan squad and the masterful spin of Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Played in the challenging conditions of Dhaka, the game has been a showcase of traditional Test cricket values.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz proved why he is considered one of the premier all-rounders in subcontinental conditions. His five-wicket haul was a display of relentless accuracy and flight, bamboozling a middle order that included stalwarts like Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel. His ability to extract turn from the Sher-e-Bangla track placed Pakistan under immense pressure during the crucial middle sessions.
On the other side, Azan Awais provided the backbone for Pakistan’s innings. In a performance that matched the poise of a veteran, Awais became a rare debutant to score a “ton” against a quality spin attack in Bangladesh. However, his century proved to be in vain as the lower order collapsed against Miraz’s spin, leaving Pakistan trailing by a narrow margin as the game moved into its decisive phase.
As the series opener progresses, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh side appears to have the upper hand strategically. While the win probability originally favored Pakistan at 54% compared to Bangladesh’s 39%, the recent “Five-For” has significantly bolstered the hosts’ confidence on their home turf.
