The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about editions yet, with the latest updates surrounding Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni and the return of matches to Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium grabbing headlines. CSK confirmed today that Dhoni remains available for the upcoming season but will play a reduced number of matches due to workload management — a decision that has sparked both excitement and debate among fans.
Chennai Super Kings released an official statement earlier today confirming that Mahendra Singh Dhoni has committed to the 2026 season but will have his participation carefully managed. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who has been playing limited-overs cricket since 2020, is expected to feature in 8–12 matches rather than the full schedule.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan explained:
“Thala has given his full commitment to the team. We are working with the medical staff and Dhoni himself to ensure he is fresh for the most important games. This is about longevity and giving our fans the best possible Dhoni experience.”
Dhoni’s limited role is seen as a strategic move to preserve his energy for high-stakes matches, particularly playoffs and big rivalries. Fans on X have reacted positively overall, with many calling it a “perfect balance” and praising the franchise for transparency.

With Dhoni’s reduced game time, CSK have turned to Sanju Samson as a long-term wicketkeeping and middle-order option. Samson, previously with Rajasthan Royals, joined CSK in the 2026 mega-auction for a reported ₹18 crore. The move pairs two of India’s most stylish wicketkeeper-batters and is expected to give CSK flexibility in batting positions.
Early reports suggest Samson will open or bat at No. 3 in games where Dhoni is rested, allowing the team to maintain aggressive intent. Head coach Stephen Fleming has hinted at using both in the same XI when possible, with Samson keeping wickets in select matches.
One of the biggest off-field developments is the return of IPL matches to Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium following the tragic stampede incident during the 2025 season that claimed 11 lives and injured over 50. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and BCCI conducted a comprehensive safety audit, including upgraded entry/exit points, increased CCTV, better crowd management protocols, and additional medical facilities.
The stadium has been cleared to host a minimum of 5 IPL 2026 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), starting with their home opener against Chennai Super Kings on March 28. Fans have welcomed the news but called for strict enforcement of safety measures.
