Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that Shaheen Shah Afridi will take over as the new One Day International (ODI) captain, replacing Mohammad Rizwan ahead of the upcoming home series. The decision marks another major shift in Pakistan’s leadership setup, as the board continues to search for consistency and long-term stability across formats.
Rizwan, who took charge after Babar Azam’s resignation in late 2024, led Pakistan through a transition phase that included the 2025 Asia Cup and early preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy. However, Pakistan’s underwhelming performances in key matches, including their group-stage exit in the Asia Cup, prompted the PCB to make a leadership change.
Shaheen Afridi, already one of Pakistan’s most recognized cricketing figures, brings youthful energy and aggression to the captaincy role. At just 25, the left-arm pacer has become a cornerstone of Pakistan’s bowling attack, known for his fiery pace, swing, and ability to perform under pressure.
In a brief statement, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said, “Shaheen represents the future of Pakistan cricket. His leadership qualities, fighting spirit, and on-field presence make him the right choice to lead our ODI side as we move into a new era.”
Shaheen Afridi has previously captained Pakistan in the T20 format and has led Lahore Qalandars to two consecutive Pakistan Super League (PSL) titles, earning praise for his sharp tactical mind and calm leadership. His promotion to ODI captaincy signals the PCB’s intention to build a younger, more dynamic team ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Afridi’s immediate challenge will be Pakistan’s upcoming home ODI series against Bangladesh, followed by an away tour of South Africa. These matches will serve as an early test of his leadership, strategy, and ability to manage senior players like Babar Azam, Rizwan, and Shadab Khan within the squad.
In his first statement as captain, Shaheen expressed gratitude and determination: “It’s an honor to lead my country in ODIs. I’ve learned a lot from my predecessors, and I want to carry that forward. My focus will be on teamwork, discipline, and playing fearless cricket.”
Shaheen’s appointment could mark the beginning of a long-term vision for Pakistan cricket, with a renewed focus on youth and consistency. The PCB is reportedly planning to give him enough time to settle into the role before making further captaincy decisions in other formats.
The ODI team will also undergo minor restructuring, with new players from the domestic circuit expected to be tested under Afridi’s leadership. The main goal for Pakistan will be to develop a strong core group capable of competing against top-tier teams in future global tournaments.
Shaheen Afridi’s rise to ODI captaincy symbolizes Pakistan’s commitment to fresh leadership and long-term planning. His proven success in domestic leagues and growing influence in international cricket make him a promising choice to guide the team into its next phase.
With the Champions Trophy and future World Cup cycles on the horizon, Afridi’s challenge will be to unite a talented yet inconsistent team, and turn potential into performance on the global stage.
