What everyone's reading right now

Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan have both been ruled out of the entire series, ending any suspense over India’s two biggest fitness worries. Washington Sundar misses the series opener with a hamstring issue, while Shubman Gill has just overcome a finger scare from the warm-up game to be declared fit. The changes have forced debuts and recalls into India’s squad just days before the Galle Test begins. Sri Lanka are dealing with selection headaches of their own, with two regulars missing from their first-choice XI.
Bumrah injured his left knee fielding during the ODI series against England in Cardiff, missing the third ODI at Lord’s. He cleared a BCCI fitness assessment in Bengaluru on July 31. That optimism didn’t last: the BCCI ruled him out of the series on August 3, with the knee still not fully recovered.
Auqib Nabi replaces him, a Jammu and Kashmir pacer on his maiden Test call-up, the first from J&K picked at this level. He has 104 wickets in two Ranji seasons, 60 this year, and six in two first-class games for India A in Sri Lanka.

Sudharsan’s issue traces to a right toe stress reaction picked up on India A’s tour of Sri Lanka before the series began. He was named in the Test squad subject to fitness clearance.
He stayed at the BCCI Centre of Excellence when the squad flew out on August 4, and reports on August 5 had him batting in the nets. The BCCI ruled him out on August 9 anyway, despite noting he was recovering well.
Sarfaraz Khan comes in as cover, a batter with six Tests who scored a maiden century last time out, against New Zealand in 2024. He joins the squad in Colombo, while Devdutt Padikkal’s unbeaten 103 in the warm-up strengthens his own case at three.
Sri Lanka have fitness concerns of their own before Galle. Wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis is out, injury undisclosed, and Niroshan Dickwella returns to the Test side after three years out as his replacement.
Pathum Nissanka is also missing, recovering from wrist surgery with no return date attached. Their absences opened the door for Keshara Nuwantha and Pasindu Sooriyabandara, both handed maiden Test call-ups.
Sonal Dinusha comes in after leading the SLC XI in the warm-up, Nishan Madushka is recalled after two fifties against the tourists, and Lahiru Udara earns a spot off 188 LPL runs this year.
The fitness picture across both squads looks like this:
| Player | Team | Fitness Status | Expected Availability |
| Jasprit Bumrah | India | RULED OUT (both Tests) | Knee injury, Cardiff ODIs July 2026; ruled out Aug 3, replaced by Auqib Nabi. |
| Sai Sudharsan | India | RULED OUT (both Tests) | Toe stress reaction; ruled out Aug 9, replaced by Sarfaraz Khan. |
| Washington Sundar | India | OUT (1st Test) | Hamstring injury; 2nd Test still to be decided. |
| Shubman Gill | India | FIT, expected available | Finger injury Aug 6, missed warm-up, declared fit by Aug 13. |
| Kusal Mendis | Sri Lanka | OUT (1st Test) | Injury undisclosed; replaced by Niroshan Dickwella. |
| Pathum Nissanka | Sri Lanka | OUT (1st Test) | Recovering from wrist surgery, no return date. |
Gill’s own scare came during practice on August 6, a day before the warm-up game, when he injured his right ring finger. The BCCI said he’d sit out day one as a precaution, with KL Rahul taking over the captaincy. He missed both days but was back in the nets in Colombo on August 9 with the finger taped. He has since been declared fit for the opener, though the BCCI hasn’t issued a formal statement.
The bowling attack is settled. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Nabi provide the pace, while Jadeja leads the spin alongside Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain after his tennis elbow layoff. Sundar is out for the opener, and Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep missed selection entirely.
Add it up, and the Sri Lanka-India 1st Test key players’ fitness picture is settled just in time for Galle, with Siraj and either Prasidh Krishna or Gurnoor Brar leading the pace, and Jadeja alongside Kuldeep Yadav leading the spin on a surface expected to turn.
