Hand-picked stories you can't miss
The AUS vs BAN Test series ended in a 1-1 draw, but it produced contrasting stories across the two matches. Bangladesh scripted history by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the opening Test in Darwin, before the hosts bounced back emphatically in Mackay with an innings-and-51-run victory inside two days.
While the bowlers dominated large portions of the series, particularly in the second Test, a handful of batters managed to produce consistently impactful performances. Cameron Green finished as the leading run-scorer of the series with 184 runs, followed by Steve Smith with 157 and Najmul Hossain Shanto with 115.
Here is a look at the top three run-getters from the Australia vs Bangladesh Test series:
Team: Bangladesh
Najmul Hossain Shanto was Bangladesh’s third-highest run-scorer in the two-Test series, accumulating 115 runs.
The Bangladesh captain made his biggest contribution in the opening Test in Darwin, where his composed 84 off 126 deliveries played a significant role in his team’s historic victory. Shanto’s innings came during Bangladesh’s imposing first-innings total of 426, which ultimately put the hosts under enormous pressure.
Shanto’s knock was particularly valuable because Bangladesh had lost early wickets, but he helped steady the innings and build a substantial partnership with Tanzid Hasan. The captain’s ability to absorb pressure and rotate the strike allowed Bangladesh to wrestle control away from Australia.
However, Shanto struggled to replicate that success in the second Test at Mackay. He was dismissed for just nine in Bangladesh’s first innings as Mitchell Starc ripped through the top order, while he managed 31 in the second innings before falling to Nathan Lyon.
Nevertheless, his 84 in Darwin proved to be one of the defining batting performances of the series. It also underlined his importance to Bangladesh’s Test batting unit.
Although Bangladesh were unable to win the series after their historic opening victory, Shanto’s contribution ensured that he finished among the three highest run-scorers.
Team: Australia
Steve Smith finished the series as Australia’s second-highest run-scorer with 157 runs.
The veteran batter was arguably Australia’s most reliable top-order player during the difficult opening Test in Darwin. When the hosts were bowled out for only 198 after being asked to bat first, Smith stood apart from his teammates with an excellent 71 off 109 balls.
Australia’s batting collapse made Smith’s contribution even more important. None of the other Australian batters crossed 23 in that innings, while Smith combined patience with his trademark ability to find scoring opportunities.
He also made 44 in Australia’s second innings, although Bangladesh eventually chased down a target of 57 to secure a famous nine-wicket victory.
Smith’s overall performance in Darwin demonstrated why he remains one of Australia’s most dependable Test batters. Despite the difficult conditions, he was able to construct innings while the rest of the batting order struggled.
However, the second Test in Mackay was a different story. Bangladesh’s Shoriful Islam and the rest of the bowling attack caused significant damage to Australia’s batting line-up, with Smith unable to produce another substantial score.
Despite that, his two useful contributions in Darwin were enough to take him to 157 runs for the series.
Smith’s performance also highlighted a wider issue for Australia: their experienced batter was often left carrying significant responsibility at the top of the order. With the team preparing for a busy Test schedule, Australia will want greater consistency from the rest of their batting unit.
Team: Australia
Cameron Green emerged as the leading run-scorer of the Australia vs Bangladesh Test series, finishing with an impressive 184 runs at an average of 61.33.
Green’s series was particularly significant because he entered it under pressure following a disappointing Ashes campaign. However, the all-rounder responded in emphatic fashion and played arguably the most important batting role for Australia across the two Tests.
His breakthrough moment came in Darwin, where he scored his maiden Test century on home soil. Green made 104 in Australia’s second innings, batting for 201 deliveries and helping Australia recover from another difficult position.
Although the century could not prevent Bangladesh from securing their historic victory, it was a statement innings from Green. He displayed patience and concentration during a period when Australia’s batting unit was under considerable pressure.
His excellent form continued in Mackay. In another low-scoring encounter dominated by the bowlers, Green top-scored for Australia with 67, becoming the only Australian batter to pass fifty in their first innings.
That innings was particularly impressive considering Shoriful Islam claimed six wickets and Bangladesh reduced Australia to 8/165 at one stage. Green’s resistance helped Australia establish a sizeable lead before the hosts’ bowlers took control.
Green’s 184 runs therefore came across three innings, with one century and one half-century. His consistency stood out in a series where batting was generally challenging.
Fox Sports rated Green as Australia’s best batter in the series, highlighting his ability to defend effectively while also shifting gears when required.
