India and West Indies will renew their battle in the second T20I of the five-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on October 9. The hosts will enter the contest with a 1-0 lead after producing a dominant eight-wicket victory in the series opener in Lucknow.
While India’s batting stole the spotlight through captain Shreyas Iyer’s sensational unbeaten 102, their bowling attack also played a significant role in setting up the victory. West Indies were restricted to 171 in 19.1 overs after being reduced to 44/3 during the powerplay.
Naman Dhir made an instant impact on his T20I debut with three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel picked up two wickets apiece. Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav also chipped in with one wicket each.
West Indies, meanwhile, will need their bowlers to produce a much-improved performance after India’s batters chased down the target in only 14.4 overs.
With the Ranchi surface expected to offer a good contest between bat and ball, here are the top three bowlers to watch out for in the second T20I.
1. Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep Singh remains one of India’s most important bowling weapons in the shortest format and will be under the spotlight once again in Ranchi.
The left-arm pacer provided India with an early breakthrough in the opening game, dismissing Kamil Pooran for 12 in the fifth over. He bowled a yorker outside off stump, which Pooran dragged onto his own stumps.
Arshdeep eventually finished with figures of 1/34 from his four overs. Although he was slightly expensive, his ability to strike during the powerplay remains crucial to India’s plans.
West Indies possess several dangerous top-order batters, including Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell. Arshdeep’s left-arm angle and ability to swing the new ball could once again test them early.
His role at the death will be equally important. With Sherfane Rutherford demonstrating his ability to accelerate late in the innings with a 56-ball effort, India will need Arshdeep to execute his yorkers and slower deliveries accurately.
2. Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav was one of India’s most effective bowlers in the first T20I and is a strong contender to make another major impact in Ranchi.
The wrist-spinner claimed two wickets for 33 runs from his four overs in Lucknow. More importantly, he helped India maintain pressure during the middle overs when West Indies were attempting to rebuild their innings.
Kuldeep dismissed Roston Chase and Matthew Forde, breaking through the middle and lower order. His ability to turn the ball sharply in both directions makes him particularly difficult to attack when batters are attempting to increase the scoring rate.
The battle between Kuldeep and West Indies’ aggressive middle-order batters could again prove decisive. Sherfane Rutherford’s ability to attack spin will be particularly interesting after he smashed 56 in the series opener.
Ranchi could provide Kuldeep with opportunities to vary his pace and flight, making him one of the biggest threats to the Caribbean batting lineup.
3. Naman Dhir
Naman Dhir is arguably the most intriguing bowling option to watch after his spectacular T20I debut.
The all-rounder returned figures of 3/31 from four overs in Lucknow, becoming the leading wicket-taker in India’s bowling attack during the opening match.
Dhir’s breakthrough came at a crucial stage. He dismissed Shai Hope for 52, ending a 63-run partnership between Hope and Rutherford that had helped West Indies recover from a difficult start. He then removed Romario Shepherd and Sherfane Springer to prevent the visitors from finishing strongly.
His dismissal of Hope was particularly important because the West Indies captain had anchored the innings effectively. Dhir dragged the length back and used the slower pace to force Hope into a mistimed pull, with Axar Patel completing the catch at deep mid-wicket.
Dhir’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives India an additional tactical option. If he can replicate even part of his debut performance, West Indies could find themselves under pressure during the middle overs once again.
| Rank | Bowler | Team | Key reason |
| 1 | Arshdeep Singh | India | Took Kamil Pooran’s wicket with the new ball |
| 2 | Kuldeep Yadav | India | Claimed two wickets in the series opener |
| 3 | Naman Dhir | India | Impressive 3/31 on T20I debut |
Conclusion
India’s bowling attack enters the second T20I with plenty of confidence after restricting West Indies to 171 in Lucknow. The visitors will need to find ways to counter India’s combination of left-arm pace, wrist-spin and Dhir’s variations if they are to level the series.
Arshdeep Singh’s new-ball and death-overs role, Kuldeep Yadav’s middle-over threat and Naman Dhir’s breakthrough performance could once again shape India’s bowling strategy.
West Indies have enough power in their batting lineup to put pressure on India’s bowlers, but another disciplined performance from these three could put the hosts in a strong position to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
