Australia and South Africa are set to renew their Test rivalry when they meet in the first match of their three-Test series at Kingsmead in Durban on October 9. The series is an important one in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, with Australia currently leading the standings and South Africa occupying second place.
The contest carries additional intrigue after South Africa’s historic victory over Australia in last year’s World Test Championship Final. The Proteas will be confident after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the preceding ODI series, but the longest format presents a completely different challenge.
Australia, meanwhile, will be keen to respond strongly in red-ball cricket. Their batting lineup features the likes of Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood form a formidable pace attack. South Africa have plenty of firepower of their own, with Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Ryan Rickelton and David Bedingham expected to shoulder the batting responsibility.
With several world-class players on both sides, here are the top three player battles to watch out for in the first Test between Australia and South Africa.
1. Travis Head vs Kagiso Rabada
The battle between Travis Head and Kagiso Rabada could set the tone for the Test, provided the South African fast bowler is cleared to play.
Head has established himself as one of Australia’s most destructive Test batters, particularly when he can dictate terms during the opening stages of an innings. His attacking approach can quickly put opposition bowlers under pressure, but South Africa have the perfect type of bowler to challenge him in Rabada.
Rabada has been recovering from a hamstring injury but remains in contention for the Durban Test after bowling in a two-day intra-squad match. South Africa’s management is expected to make a final call on his availability close to the match.
If Rabada plays, his pace, movement and ability to attack the stumps could make the contest fascinating. Head will want to put pressure on him with attacking strokes, whereas Rabada’s objective will be to make the Australian opener play as often as possible.
A breakthrough against Head could give South Africa significant momentum, while another aggressive Head innings could force the Proteas to rethink their bowling plans early.
2. Aiden Markram vs Nathan Lyon
The contest between Aiden Markram and Nathan Lyon could become increasingly important as the Test progresses.
Markram has an outstanding record against Australia and will enter the series with plenty of confidence. He averages 61.6 against Australia, significantly higher than his overall Test average, and was the Player of the Match in the 2025 WTC Final after producing the match-winning fourth-innings century.
The Australian attack will therefore be desperate to prevent Markram from settling.
Nathan Lyon could play a key role in that plan. The veteran off-spinner has built his career around creating pressure over long spells, particularly once the ball becomes older and the pitch begins offering assistance.
Markram’s ability to use his feet and attack spin will be tested against Lyon’s accuracy and variations. The South African batter will need to judge when to attack and when to absorb pressure.
If Markram gets through Lyon’s first spell comfortably, he could potentially build a match-defining innings. Conversely, Lyon dismissing South Africa’s premier Australia-specialist batter would be a major boost for the visitors.
3. Steve Smith vs Marco Jansen
Steve Smith against Marco Jansen is another battle that could have a significant influence on the first Test.
Smith remains one of Australia’s most accomplished Test batters and will be particularly motivated heading into the series. He is also expected to receive a hostile reception from sections of the South African crowd because of the memories surrounding the 2018 ball-tampering controversy. Cricket Australia noted that similar hostility in the 2019 Ashes brought out one of Smith’s best performances.
South Africa could look towards Jansen to challenge him with a combination of height, bounce and movement.
The left-arm seamer presents a different angle to Australia’s right-handed middle order. His ability to extract bounce from a good length can make it difficult for batters to drive freely, while his height allows him to create awkward deliveries around the shoulder of the bat.
Smith, however, is renowned for finding unconventional scoring options and adapting to different bowling plans. The key for Jansen will be maintaining pressure rather than searching constantly for the perfect delivery.
If Smith gets into his trademark rhythm, Australia could gain control of the middle session. If Jansen can find an early breakthrough, South Africa could expose Australia’s middle order to sustained pressure.
